Just to get more precise about figures: BIA was certified 9 times platinum in the US alone (without counting Canada or latin America), which means it sold 9 million there. It sold over 14 million in Europe. (with 4 million in the UK alone - certified in 2000, 2 million+ in France, certified in 1994!) These figures don't include those of Australia, Japan, the African continent, Russia, the East Countries, Arab countires, Israel... Remark that these figures approximately date back to 1999-2000. No update has been made since then. They may well have evolved as a consequence. This could have been a lot better,the remastering is not that good and I must agree it is a bit of a one track album.

Later albums I found boring I was never a great fan, but this album is different, apart from "Sultans of Swing' which has been done to death i like very track especially "Six Blade Knife' I would recommend this album as a classic for your collection.

I've had this album SOME years now, to find it's still available is great news. Backed up the album, and bought the VHS tape of the show. WHY oh WHY, can I not get it on DVD? I don't want to lose it to equipment outdating. How much does it cost to convert tape to DVD, and will it let me? THIS is THE definitive Dire Straits. Forget all the other albums, start with this, and then find other albums with less repeats on them. Dire Straits greatest annoyance, is repeating many tracks, on many albums. Chances are you will end up with some tracks several times. ALCHEMY will have your favourite version of any track that's on it though, GUARANTEED! One of the best albums in the world. Where's the DVD !!!!

I'm not going to comment on the musical merits of Mark Knopfler's (perhaps) defining achievement--but wish to note that that although this CD is extensively labeled as 'remastered'; it is ironically quite lacking in terms of audio quality. That is not to say it is a bad disc, but I was expecting more than merely an 'increased-loudness'-treatment. I do wish there is a SACD release of this album planned...

After the almost "cult" appeal of their eponymous debut album, and the comparative lack of interest shown in "Communique", as the band trod water, 1981 saw the band release this, their seminal recording. Forget "Brothers In Arms" for one minute, if you possibly can, for it is here that the true soul of Dire Straits is to be found. There is nothing, in my opinion, that beats "Tunnel Of Love" in Dire Straits' recorded output for lyrics, atmosphere, musicianship and sheer joy. Beginning with the swirling fairground wurlitzer organ, the listener is catapulted immediately to that seedy fairground world so beloved a few years' earlier of David Essex. The imagery is second to none and is indeed, continued in "Romeo And Juliet" (despite the change in pace) and the underrated ... Read More:

Another compilation of Straits songs and yet again they get it wrong.Instead of a two-disc anthology concentrating on the bands career (the Eagles 2-disc set is a prime example of what could and should have been) we are given a compilation which mixes Straits material with solo stuff and collaborations with female singers.This is really a mess - lets hope the powers that be listen and get it right in future.

Having not heard this album for twenty years, and then only a friend's copy, I was shocked at just how good it is. Jerry Wexler didn't think much of Dire Straits' debut record, and reportedly told the band: "We'll put this one out, but now lets go and make real record". Communique was the result. Recorded at Compass Point, Nassau with Wexler and Barry Beckett sharing production duties, by the time it was being mixed at Muscle Shoals, 'Sultans of Swing' previously dismissed, was well on its to being a massive worldwide hit. Nonetheless Wexler and Beckett had worked their magic and Communique shimmers, its sound crystalline, and under the influence both of the producers and the island locale, on occasion, the band even grooves. Yesterday I purchased a copy of the cd set - Private Investigations , and low and behold when I played it, the songs didnt match the linear notes... Telegraph Rd and So Far Away didnt EXIST...There were repeats of Boom Like That and Calling Elvis... Maybe the NZ pressing was different to the origional, if so its not fair. But I got it at a good price, The retailer know nothing was wrong, I wont return the discs as the deal was extra good... Hey still love Mark Knoflers style, use of the Fender...
