Django Reinhardt is without a doubt the finest Jazz guitarist ever to have lived. Consequently, the jazz he made in the smokey clubs of 1940's Paris, with his quartet, is amazing. Clarinet, Violin, Drums, and Guitar build fantastic layers and tempos that are unparalleled by any jazz group/artist to attempt it. Buy any Django Reinhardt CD and love it.

Django Reinhardt should probably never have been able to play the guitar as an adult. He lost the use of two fingers in a fire when he was young, and as a result had to alter his playing style so that the used only two fingers on his left hand. Instead of finding this a disability, he used it to develop a style that is different from most other guitarists of the period. This CD covers his earliest works, dealing mostly with his 'Hot Club of France' days. There are plenty of standout tracks here, along with the skills of Stephane Grappelli, both of whom benefitted greatly from the collaboration. To be honest, you won't exclaim "Wow! Django on electric guitar!" when you play the first disc, because his style was so pizzicato already that the difference is barely discernible. You may, like Chad, ask "Wot? No Grappelli?" because his absence is far more noticeable. He and Django had sparked off each other and, despite the disparity of their backgrounds (the fastidious Stephane once commented " `is feet, that was something to 'ear!"), between them they created a unique sound. Instead, the clarinettist Hubert Rostaing is present on the first CD for all but the first two tracks, including transfers of recordings made in the RDF studios in Paris in September 1947. This second box set of Django Reinhardt from JSP is just as good as the first. Together they provide a comprehensive collection of the best of Django's recordings in excellent transfers at an unbelievably low price. Strongly recommended.
