I found a (Gramophone) recommendation for this disc in a book I have been reading. To be honest I was a little suspicious that this may just be a show piece for Pletnev, rather than a serious interpretation of Scarlatti's work which is fair enough but not what I usually look for. My suspicions were put to rest somewhat though when I found the recording thoroughly enjoyable. I can not say however that I feel transported to the Baroque era whilst listening. Not just by the fact that a piano is used but also by Pletnev's playing, which as one other reviewer pointed out has a somewhat romantic feel to it. However, this does not spoil my enjoyment of this beautiful music and recording.

This 6-CD set contains all the recordings that Vladimir Horowitz made during the last five years of his life, including the historic concert he did in Moscow in 1986, three years before his death in 1989. Truly at the height of his maturity, these recordings breathe love, consolation, compassion, vitality, and many other feelings you'd associate with true artistic heights. At this budget price, this is excellent value for money. There's even a Mozart concerto he recorded with an orchestra in 1986. From the first track, the Bach prelude, to the last track, a live performance of the Schumann Kinderszenen, this virtuoso performances are mesmerising and healing to the soul.

Well maybe that is a bit exaggerated but it certainly ranks way up there with the best. I was fortunate enough to see Murray Perahia perform a number of these pieces in Oxford during the period leading up this recording. Handel's Chaconne in particular stuck in my mind after the concert as it had a profound affect on me. I am not one moved to tears often but the tears flowed in the concert and they still flow when I listen to this recording. The "Harmonious Blacksmith" is another astonishing piece on piano. In fact the whole album is astonishing. The playing is precise and clear at all times, as baroque music should be, but Mr Perahia manages to avoid a mechanical approach, injecting humanity into the music ... Read More:

Definitive performances of very famous guitar pieces, in the setting in which some of them were written and inspired. A benchmark for students of the guitar and a recording that should be the cornerstone of any fans collection. Inspirational!

This is a recording of what was at the time a highly political event. Horowitz who had originally fled the Soviet Union returning for the first time as the most highly rated pianist in the world with the culmination of the tour being this concert. I may be wrong but I believe this was the first non-sporting event broadcast live in both the USSR and the USA. I'm told it was initially intended that only senior party officials would be at the concert but that the place ended up overwhelmed with others forcing their way in such that people were stood in the doorways and walkways. I've seen a recording of the concert with huge, burly Soviet guards in floods of tears. They have good reason. Horowitz was an amazing man and ... Read More:

Gottlieb Wallisch is a young Austrian pianist, just now thirty, who has turned in some creditable recordings of Schubert piano sonatas on the Naxos label. I particularly liked this one -- Schubert: Piano Sonatas Nos. 1, 8 & 15 'Reliquie' -- that contains the 'Reliquie' sonata and this one -- Schubert: Piano Sonatas Nos. 5, 7a, 11 & 12. I was a little less impressed with this one -- Schubert: Piano Sonatas Nos. 2, 3 & 6 -- largely because it contained primarily early, and less distinctive, sonatas by Schubert. Now Wallisch appears again, this time in Volume 11 of the ongoing Naxos series of the complete keyboard sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti. Nice to see that Bela has expanded his classical repertoire from the single piece that he used to play on stage (and on his DVD). Having been a fan of his for many years and having been fortunate enough to catch him "Live" at The Mean Fiddler" in Harlesden a few years ago, I am delighted to see him go from strength to strength. He has also moved The Banjo from what was perceived by many to be an instrument of derision to a thing of considerable beauty! Let's face it, Bela could play anything, if he set his mind to it.His ability and talent seem boundless. I look forward with anticipation to see where he decides to go from here.
