I've often said that "stadium rock" crap of the mid 70's spawned punk rock. I'd like to think it also spawned "pub rock", a U.K. mid 70's phenomena that incorporated a low rent, no nonsense gang of r&b loving musos who played in pubs to smaller audiences. No one better exemplifies this description than Canvey Island's Dr. Feelgood. Led by lead singer /gob iron blower Lee Brilleaux and lead string bender Wilko Johnson (who played in the choppy style of the legendary Mick Green of The Pirates), "the Feelgoods" (as they were known to fans) were balls up rock n' roll that didn't need 20 minute guitar solos, or lasers, blow in the back of your Roller or champagne and caviar. Their debut LP 1974's "Down By The Jetty" was all about stale pints ... Read More:

How to describe this much-praised album? You could say that it captures the UK's best pub band at the height of their powers. You could say that it's stripped down R&B from a time when the term still meant something. You could say that it laid the foundations for the punk explosion that was just around the corner, although there are quite a few claimants to that title. The fact remains that without the visual appeal of the band's performance, with Wilco stalking around the stage like... a mad axe-man? ... the music is just a little bit too dull and predictable to be really great. Although I suppose you do have to admire the sheer damn cheek of the one-note guitar solo on "I'm a hog for you baby". Best enjoyed with beer.

Dr Feelgood was (is) a bar band. A pub rock band. They played short, unpretentious rock songs, muscular and melodious R&B loaded with crunching guitar riffs...you must've heard their renditions of "See You Later, Alligator" and "Violent Love".

These forty tracks are really everything that the casual Feelgood fan needs. "Roxette" is here, as is "Keep It Out Of Sight", "No Mo Do Yakamo", "Sugar Turns To Alcohol", "Milk & Alcohol" and every other well-known song, including four from the post-Brilleaux album "On The Road Again".
Not every song may be of the caliber of "Roxette" or the other classic hits, but there is certainly nothing bad on here.

I'm sure that some dedicated fans can find good some albums tracks missing, ... Read More:

Remember when R & B meant 'Rhythm and Blues'? That's what Dr Feelgood's early albums were all about, before the term 'pub rock' was invented. I'd enjoyed 'Down by the Jetty', but only for about half the tracks, when I heard 'Malpractice'. It was inspirational at the time. Popular music had split into the trashy aftermath of 'glam rock' and the super-serious 'progressive rock': Dr Feelgood brought the emphasis back to the sound, the beat and the raw emotion of music. From 'Watch your step', through 'Riot in cell block no. 9' to 'You shouldn't call the doctor...' this was a whole album of fast, danceable music. The home-grown feel added to the appeal: four ordinary blokes, singing about funny stories and ordinary things. I wholeheartedly recommend this ... Read More:

Though the classic Feelgood line-up was gone, the reconstituted band continued to make some fine albums. 'Private Practice' has a little more finesse in the production than their other efforts and represented a new commercial peak. The first single, the chugging 'Down At The Doctors,' was a minor hit and should have fared better. The incisive 'Milk And Alcohol' was a major hit. Both of these songs appeared on what was a flawless first side of the LP. 'Every Kind Of Vice,' like 'Milk And Alcohol' is Dr Feelgood at their post-Wilko best, lean and mean. Their cover of 'Things Get Better' is gentler and features some beautiful guitar work from John Mayo. 'Night Time,' another cover, has a great groove.

The second 'side' is a little patchy. Nick Lowe's ... Read More:

A word of warning: this is NOT a "best of" collection. Rather, it is an album featuring excellent new versions of old favourites, as the cover clearly states. It is also highly recommended. For the last 35 years, Dr Feelgood has been one of the great live bands. Thankfully, this studio CD captures them as you hear them on stage. Which is how it should be. The last couple of albums (yes, even the live one) have sounded a little dry, almost under-confident, and not at all like the balls-to-the-wall beast that is Feelgood on stage. On this release, however, Kevin Morris hangs off the beat just that perfect fraction to give the band swing, whilst still retaining the drive for which the Feelgoods are rightly famed. Phil Mitchell provides unobstrusive but vital ... Read More:

10.Down at the BBC: in Concert 1977-1978 by: Dr. Feelgood

This album is made up of two concerts performed for the BBC's In Concert Series. They were recorded several months apart in the same year, hence some duplication of songs. I found the second half (track 12 onwards) particularly interesting as I was at that recording and it was the first time I ever heard Milk and Alcohol.

This was the period when Wilko Johnson had left and Gypie Mayo played guitar. There was some bad blood at the time and none of the earlier Wilko era songs were played (apart from covers), so no "Back in the Night" or "Roxette".

However, there is some great material including songs from their recent albums of the time, "Be Seeing You" and "Private Practice", all performed as they should be i.e. live.
