His voice is incredible, his delivery immaculate, but the backing music on this cd is intrusive. cheesy and Disneyesque. Folk songs are made for simple backing, not a huge orchestra swooping with saccharine strings. This was a mistake. The ones that work best are those sung almost unaccompanied. "Wraggle-taggle gypsies" is of novelty interest only: to hear him using both his trained countertenor voice and his untrained baritone chest voice.

However, the exercise of singing these songs in a "story-telling" way enhanced his stage technique considerably and got him putting more movement and acting into his stage work, so it had its uses.

If you can, hear Scholl singing these songs live, accompanied by a lute, guitar ... Read More:

In a rare departure from lofty restraint, Fanfare magazine described this CD as 'perfect'. It comes pretty close. The range of emotion Andreas Scholl achieves, from raw agony to detached sublimity, is impressive. Gone the lad whose tone was described as 'merely ethereal'. Here's a mature singer who can do pain, hate, despair, naughty and longing with equal conviction and assurance, and who is not afraid to push his voice to the extreme of what it can do, or to sacrifice beauty of tone in favour of expression, in order get the most from a song, but always under control. One of Scholl's best to date.

From the outset let me say that I have always been a huge fan of Sting, and of John Dowland. But I was unsure that the two could possibly go together. Having listened to the CD several times now, I am still unsure but the idea is growing on me.

Let's face it, Sting is not the world's best vocalist, his breathy nasal voice being well-suited to ska and light jazz, but ultimately tending to be tiresome. The problem is not just his voice, but perhaps more his odd vowel sounds which have always been a little unnatural and that is very obvious here with his voice rather forward in the mix.

So my first thought was that there are many very beautiful renderings of this material by specialists like Ian Partridge and Sting's offering ... Read More:
