This is Electric Light Orchestra at their best! Great "classics" and stuff you might be difficult to find elsewhere than on this very enjoyable compilation. Super item to a low cost!

A grower. Loved Discovery and Out of the blue. This took a while to get into but boy does it pay off. Great melodies.
Can't really see this as a concept album. A few mentions of the future in the lyrics but mostly a collection of great melodies. The singles seem out of place somewhat. Hold on tight and Twilight,Way lifes meant to be are out and out rockers, not among my favourite elo tracks. Here is the news/Ticket to the moon seem more apt and fit in better. The filler tracks on the album are all terrific. Not a bad track among them. From hearing the singles i would never thought of buying the album but the rest of the songs make up for them. Shame no strings but never mind. Great stuff

This album probably marks the end of the most fertile part of Jeff Lynne's songwriting career, as well as the time where ELO's musical direction coincided with the public mood. It's also the album where the band flirted more with the rhythmic possibilities and technologies of disco and (at that time) dance music. It also sounds wonderfully rich and textured, as one would expect from Lynne's production by this time. It's a testament to the band that this album is still largely a success.

The signs were clear in tracks like Shine A Little Love and Confusion. Indeed, the latter's influence clearly stayed with Lynne because some of its sounds resurfaced on George Harrison's Stuck Inside A Cloud from the posthumous, Lynne-produced Brainwashed. ... Read More:

I think the title ive chosen to head my review says it all.Xanadu the album(ELOs contributions only)is more of what we've come to expect from the greatest band of all time. The other songs on the album vary in quality between not bad and down right awful.DO NOT!!!! buy this album then think to yourself"He's full of it,these songs are great,im buying the film"cos this atitude will only leave you however many pounds, dollars whatever lighter in the pocket and have taken up 90 minutes of you.re life you'll never get back.so In conclusion get the album, dont follow this up by seeing the movie.

I bought this as a risk purchase as my third option in a three for two HMV deal and didn't unwrap it for over a year. What a gem to finally find..its the familiar ELO sound but Jeff Lynne was well on his way to a creative peak with this early album. Don't be put off by the 'concept' album label...you can ignore all that and also all the hoary lyrics. None of that matters as the tunes and instrumentation are superb. It wasn't instantly appealing but I put it on a couple of times in the background and now I can't stop playing it. I get snatches of the songs in my head all day. I'm not a huge ELO fan and I only have their greatest hits vols I and II but this has made me want to try more of their complete albums.

Even though the key four players from the previous album (Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, Richard Tandy & Kelly Groucutt) were still present, 'Secret Messages', the 1983 follow-up to 'Time', saw an even greater usage of keyboards/synthesizers and the virtual abolition of the classical/rock fusion orchestra-based concept the group had been started for. In a way, this album was the beginning of the end of ELO and, even though there are some fine songs on the album, it just isn't the Electric Light Orchestra.

This digitally remastered and enhanced version sounds a lot more vibrant then the previously issued original CD and makes it sound a little less dated than it had to me, but it is still very much a period piece. I'd be surprised if anyone heard this ... Read More:

It's a strange album this. By his own admission, Jeff Lynnne's enthusiasm for ELO had waned greatly by this point, feeling himself constricted by the orchestral sounds that were the band's trademark. BoP was an attempt to escape from this and inject some new life into things.

By this stage, ELO was only really Lynne, Richard Tandy and Bev Bevan, so arrangements were very much more pared down. In hindsight of course, we know that things didn't really work and that Lynne went off to produce, while Bevan ended up in ELO II. Part of the reason this was the quality of the material, which wasn't as strong as some of ELO's earlier triumphs, while part was due to changing public mood. The world had moved on and ELO didn't really figure anymore.

While not ... Read More:
