There really isn't much to say.

Yes, this is an "old recording" and it shows the technology of its age with a slight lack of bright crispness, but DON'T LET THIS PUT YOU OFF.

There are some performances that are genuinely special and even if they were recorded in 1964, before the advent of digital recording techniques, they remain special nevertheless. This performance has gravitas, power, majesty and sublime magnificence.

Yes, I'd accept that Lucia Popp could have done with being a bit more fearsome - she is, after all, the epitome of monstrous evil - but that is the tiniest of criticisms when you're wallowing in her GLORIOUS voice and utterly brilliant coloratura.

This is the best recording ... Read More:

Don Giovanni is perhaps the greatest opera of all and has been very lucky on disc with many fine recordings. This one, however, just about tops the lot. It has Guilini and the Philamonia at the top of their game, a simply wonderful cast with Wachter as the most demonic Don on record, and Legge's superb production. The recording still sounds well though not quite up to the latest digital standards, of course. But it is one of Legge's best. Just listen to the climax with chords thundering and Frick's sepulchral bass summoning Giovanni to hell. If the hairs don't rise on your neck then you can demand your money back!
For a refreshing alternative try Jacobs (HM) but all round this one is the tops.

While there are some lovely pieces of music on these CDs they don't match the titles. When I bought this 2-set CD I thought that maybe I had received Vol2. or something by mistake as none of the tracks match the information on the CD insert. I decided to check by listening to the samples here on Amazon & discovered that they too are incorrect. Just to ensure I wasn't going mad I found the CD set on a US website and listened to their samples & they were correct!!! I wish someone could explain.

If Amazon would let me give this 7 stars then I would! Even though the recording is over 40 years old it still sounds well. Klemperer brings an amazing sense of occasion to this performance - it's like all you would expect a "live" performance to be and then a bit more on top.

First movement: Stern, weighty and FAST, building to a mighty central climax. Every bit of the musical form fits beautifully into a superbly thought-out whole. This is the "funeral march of a corpse that is angry about dying" par excellence. The particular genius of Klemperer is to get the more reflective and gentle sections of the movement to mesh with the drama in a wonderfully seamless way.

Second Movement: A lovely "old-fashioned" minuet with finely placed fugato ... Read More:

This is an Historic phenomenon. It is really the best recording of 9th Symphony. I can compare only with Klemperer's recording. Furtwangler is ever-champion performer of Beethoven.

The orchestra is, the Bayreuth's of the famous opera house of Wagner. But this building was almost collapsed in 1940's because of Nazis!! But, when the World War II finished, the house was restored and it was reopened in 1951. And in this opening, Furtwangler conducted 9th Symphony, recorded on this CD! This symphony is "Ode to Joy", indeed...

The soloists quartet adn chorus are excellent, too.
I like especially, the performances offirst and last movement. The first mov. is really "Allegro non troppo" adn "un poco maestoso". The tempi are very controlled, mystic and ... Read More:

Many people will go for Kleiber or Giulini's recordings, but this Karajan one is something special. All the secco recitatives are cut, which works surprisingly well, as you just get this flow of glorious uninterrupted music.
Kunz, London and Schwarzkopf give exceptionally fine performances, and Jurinac also manages well in a mezzo role. In the first couple of acts, Seefried sounds a bit nasal, but it should not bother you, as she gives an exceptionally characterful performance.
The sound is a bit dated, but it is good for a 1950 mono recording, and it comes with a full libretto, synopsis and essay. It is a little hard to get hold of, but once you've given it a listen, it will be your favourite nozze di figaro

This must be the ideal recording of the 'Four Last Songs'. If her earlier version with Ackerman shows Schwarzkopf's young voice at its finest, in the remake with Szell she has added maturity and depth to her interpretation of what are, of course, songs of old age and autumn mellowness. Her voice here is incredibly beautiful; her interpretation of the words faultless. Szell weaves a wonderful orchestral backdrop and the (analogue) recording quality is quite flawless. Beautiful remastering as well!

I keep on listening to new recordings of the 'Four Last Songs' but keep on coming back to this one. A true 'Great Recording of the Century'!

If it is slightly unusual to have 2 recordings of the same opera by the same conductor in the shops 30 years after they were recorded, it is ever more rare to find 3. Karl Bohm’s expertise as a Mozartian conductor amply justifies this extravagance, and of his 3 recordings, this is his best. The overwhelming impression the recording leaves is one of sympathetic tempi. Bohm could never be accused of rushing Mozart, and to some tastes, he may seem a little slow. For my taste however, a more relaxed tempi allows every nuance and phrase to be articulated correctly, and so great is his control over Philharmonia Orchestra that this recording is a near flawless appreciation of Mozart’s phrasing genius.

Recorded in 1962, it has the advantage of capturing the finest cast on ... Read More:

Can 2 middle-aged ladies sing a little girl and boy without sounding silly? Yes! Before the first couple of lines have been sung you can see those two children before you and you will like them.

I disagree with the previous review in that the sound quality is fine.
Josef Metternich makes a fine, jolly father while Else Schurhoff is especially funny when she sweetly proclaims herself to be 'as innocent as a little child. That's why I like little children so much'.
The vocal acting makes you see the characters.
The whole CD is as delicious as the witch's house and comes complete with a libretto which contains the German and, instead of a translation, an English version of the opera.
