I liked this album a lot. It starts off strong and gets better through to the two songs at the end, which for me were the highlights. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice, beautiful music, beautifully produced. A melancholy album pretty much through and through I felt, and that would be my only criticism. Nothing pacey and upbeat to help mix it up a bit. Four stars from me.

I always had a problem with Country as a youngster, growing up as I did in a working class English town and hooked on Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Sabbath. Though I could listen to Johnny Cash, some of the female country stars of the time (Tammy Wynette etc) really grated on me. I bought this collection on a whim while working out in California a couple of years ago. This was the first time I really listened to her as a recording artist in her own right, though I was familiar with her work with Gram Parsons and her excellent backing vocals on Dylan's Desire. Traditional country masterpiece Blue Kentucky Girl is a real roots country album, both in the sound and the nature imagery of the songs, as is obvious from titles like Beneath Still Waters, Hickory Wind, Sorrow In The Wind and Rough & Rocky. The rhythmic uptempo number Sister's Coming Home with its great fiddle opens the album, and is followed by the stirring slow ballad Beneath Still Waters. Hickory Wind is the Gram Parsons song, and of course Emmylou makes it her own with a soulful, delicate interpretation. The execution is quite different from her duet with Gram Parsons. This recording of Save The Last Dance For Me is probably the definite version by now, whilst Sorrow In The Wind is a poignant gentle song full of yearning, where ... Read More:

Great song choices here though perhaps only 'Telling Me Lies' sounds out of place. What really sells this album is the sheer joy you feel at the harmonies. I'm not a big fan of the singers so have no agenda here, but they sound fantastic together. Stand out tracks include 'I've Had Enough', 'Those Memories' and and the aching 'My Dear Companion'

If you have listened to Emmylou's 70's albums, you may be disappointed in this album but give it a chance. It is slower and more difficult than the first albums but it has its moments. The songs like "All My Tears" and "Orphan Girl" are great!

As if the joys of Trio I were not enough !. Dolly, Linda and Emmylou returned in 1999 with another collection of perfectly chosen songs.Rarely can three such distinctive voices have melded to make such a perfect whole. A decade's further experience tells subtely in both individual and ensemble performances. Ronstadt's velvety tones have deepened and mellowed; Harris gives glimpses of what was to come with "Wrecking Ball", a little cracked, craggy and ephemeral; Parton is as sublime as ever ! You may remember a previous compilation, Ultimate Dolly Parton, that was released a couple of years ago. The standard American version was a single CD containing 20 tracks. The UK version had those tracks plus a bonus re-mix of Early morning breeze. There was also a double-CD version that contained 36 tracks, available by mail order only from one outlet in the USA, which did not allow orders from outside the USA. However, this version was released as standard in Germany so anybody who wanted it could by the German version if they couldn't buy (or didn't know about) the German version - it is available from several Amazon sites. I really love this album. Emmyloyu has a great voice! She is one of the best female singers ever! The songs "Bluebird Wine", "Sleepless Nights", and "Boulder to Birmingham" are so beautiful and good! This is a 70's classic!

This album, in its original vinyl form, was my first full bluegrass album. It starts impressively with the up-tempo title track and maintains a high standard throughout the original album. I replaced my vinyl with CD, since when Rhino have re-mastered it and added two bonus tracks (You're gonna change, Root like a rose) that I'm told are good but not bluegrass. In any case, this album is well worth it for the original ten tracks. Wayfaring stranger, a traditional song, became a top ten country hit and ensured the success of the album against record company expectations. This was 1980, remember, when Kenny Rogers was the biggest name in country music and the Urban Cowboy craze was at its height.
