This album is, undeniably, a classic. It is my favourite hip-hop album ever. If you're expecting something that sounds up to date, then you'll be disappointed, but who cares - this album was made in 1987 and sounds EXACTLY like it was made in that year. Rakim's lyrics and flow are second to none in my opinion, and from his opening line of "I ain't no joke, I used to let the mic smoke, now I slam it when it's done and make sure it's broke" he rhymes effortlessly through this entire album. In comparison he makes most other MCs sound like they are struggling (the only other MCs who have achieved considerable mainstream success who are up there with him in terms of effortless flow, in my opinion, are Nas and Gza). Eric B's beats - pretty minimal ... Read More:

I really wanted to like this album. Two icons of R&B getting together again to cover some classic tracks. Unfortunately, this album is anaesthetic, tame and bland. Maybe 4 out of the 12 tracks are worth listening to. Clapton mumbles away in the background and spoils perfectly good music with muffled vocals and most of the track choice is at best uninspired.

Probably the notable exception is "Key to the Highway", which, along with "Riding with the King" is among the few highlights of this album. The musicianship is brilliant but it's so TAME!

What this pair need to to is get up on stage with George Thorogood and hammer it out instead of sitting in their rocking chairs telling everyone what fine guitarists they are while they ... Read More:

This LP represents a truly great moment in Hip Hop. Eric B & Rakim are to Hip-Hop what George Clinton is to funk, and this is them at their finest. Eric B's production was so ahead of its time when this LP was released, and Rakim will probably always be hailed as the most seminal of all MCs.

While I love all four Eric B & Rakim albums, I must confess that some of the tracks from their first two have not dated well and Rakim tries way too hard to be tough on most of the tracks from their fourth - although "Know the Ledge" is surely one of the greatest tracks in hip hop history. On this album they seemed to hit the perfect formula, and every track here remains flawless and timeless 17 years later.

Aaaaaahhhhhh........this brings back memories of when hip hop was all about the beats & the rhymes - none of this bling wearin',money flashin',gun blazin',gangsta braggin' stuff. Rakim is the original lyrical god of the m.i.c. The first 3 tracks on this album are an absolute knockout - the 'holy trinity' if you like. Listening to the title track still sends shivers down my spine.......it's that good.

I'm not the kinda guy to mindlessly give about definitive statements about albums, but here we go: best opening three tracks of any album.

Seriously, what's touching it? Opening with 20 or so seconds of speaker-shattering bass rumble, 'Follow the Leader' immediately shatters the notion of the duo falling off from their debut. Far from it; it's their best moment. I'm everlastin'; I can go on for days and days with rhyme displays that engrave deep as X-rays. I can take a phrase that's rarely heard, FLIP IT... now it's a daily word. Those lines play in my mind for days every time I hear it. Adding to the fact that this is followed by two more classic cuts ('Microphone Fiend' and 'Lyrics of Fury' - both as annihilating and endlessly quotable as ... Read More:

Few can doubt that Rakim was one of hip-hop's finest MCs, not only in terms of delivery, but also in the lyrics themselves. His influence is still felt today: Mos Def borrowed an entire verse from You Know I Got Soul ('First I think, and then I sink into the paper...'), and formed a whole song around another key Rakim lyric from this LP 'It ain't where you're from, it's where you're at'; and I must mention that horric Snap track Rhythm Is A Dancer which twisted Rakim's original 'I got a question, it's serious as cancer: who can keep the average dancer...' into something truly awful and borderline offensive.

That wasn't Rakim's fault, but all young pretenders should listen and learn from an MC who makes it all sound effortless.
