I found her interpretation of the Sibelius violin concerto less than exciting. To be sure, she plays technically very well, but it all lacks intensity and her playing is overly lyric/romantic/sweet, which does not fit the piece at all IMO. The devilish intensity and despair that should be in the concerto at times is just not there. I can't comment on the Schoenberg - it is not to my taste (which is not Hahn's fault, to be sure, she probably produced the most accessible interpretation of this ugly beast!).

I put this on my wish list because I thought I should have a recording of music from Peer Gynt. What I didn't expect was be to be really moved by the music. I was. It just sounds "right". At the price, a real bargain!

This c.d. is very much based upon Grimaud's belief in the concept of 'Universality' propounded by the poet Novalis, and others. In short and simply this is the idea that underlying the multifarious forms of sensible things we are all fundamentally connected, and that music is one way, albeit a uniquely potent one, to reveal and renew this connection. The forms of music are important in themselves, but also substantially as messengers of this spiritual conection, and that is the key to understanding the diverse nature of the music here. If you have any sympathy with any of this then you're likely to be interested in this disc, and love it as I did, but it's also interesting as an unusualy adventurous release from a major record label. It is very encouraging ... Read More:

This bargain reissue preserves Bronfman's generous coupling of the two most popular Rachmaninov concertos originally issued full-price in the early 1990s. If you want the Second and Third paired together, this is highly recommendable. The Second Concerto receives a lovely reading, brilliant and concentrated. The Third--in which Bronfman gives an authoritative account of the more demanding first-movement cadenza--is just about as commanding as any version I have heard, including versions by Argerich and Lazar Berman. In both works, he exhibits admirably clean articulation resulting in untangled passage-work. In terms of virtuosity, Bronfman is in elite company but display is not the end in itself for him. He tempers bravura with his feeling for the symphony ... Read More:

Music : The All Time Greatest Classical Album
Some of everything makes an odd soup.
In this case, Nessum Dorma fades out as if it was badly cropped from a longer recording and there's a cough in the middle of disc 1 track 12, but this double CD first introduced me to Sarah's Intimate Version of "Con Te Partiro", disc 2 track 1. You can get this on a Sarah Brightman CD instead. Just be sure it's not the duet with Andrea B. No offence to him, but this one track is gorgeous as sung by just her.
There are good tracks to have on both discs, and at least two to avoid: Sony blasphemously make Fur Elise an orchestral piece, and it's lousy, and there's The Dance Of The Knights, which sounds like sweaty men in heavy armour leaping around indecently assaulting abused instruments with inappropraite bows ...
