Much of this album serves for me as a testimony to the wonderful drumming of Martin Lamble, that feathery touch and those rolls, often playing underneath the music, or just riding the beat. There was something shimmering (and almost held-back) in the music of their live gigs, with the texture lying between the drums and the bass playing. Lamble was an extraordinary player for a 19 year old. This album is also a melancholy listen: I still remember hearing them shortly afterwards with Dave Mattacks's embarassing drumming, and the music suddenly sounded so crude and so unlovely.

This was the first ever folk-rock type album I ever bought. Still like it now after all these years - must buy it on CD....
Fairport have had many line ups over the years, but nothing can beat Sandy Denny's vocals here. Just fabulous

Richard Thompson had always stood out in earlier Fairport albums with his songwriting and guitar work but it was this album where he was essentialy taking the band where he wanted it to go. That's not to say the other members don't make thier mark, Dave Swarbick performs some of his best violin solos on this album and Simon Nicol begins making his mark as a singer and guitarist.
Obviously, none of the band could compare to Sandy Denny on vocals, so they use vocal harmonies instead consisting usually of Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbick and Ashley Hutchings replacement Dave Pegg who create a beutiful vocal track by singing together.
The Stand out tracks on this album are the bouncy opener "Walk Awhile" the most jolly and carefree song fairport ... Read More:

Fairport Convention's second album was recorded scant months after their debut, but it's light years ahead. The band had improved in every way: the playing and arrangments are tighter and the production is much, much cleaner. Importantly, they had added the peerless vocal talents of Sandy Denny. Not only was she a great singer but she was a pretty decent songwriter as well and the album opens with her beautiful song 'Fotheringay', a haunting portrait of Mary Queen Of Scots in her fortress prison. Pretty much every band member gets some form of songwriting credit, although Richard Thompson was responsible for the bulk of the original songs, showing himself to be a composer of remarkable assurance, especially on the timeless 'Meet On The Ledge' which remains Fairport's ... this is a wonderful opportunity to compare tracks with Judy Dyble singing with the same song with Sandy Denny on Heyday, which can only have been a few months later. Although the heyday versions are usually better, and the arrangements tighter, the earlier tracks have a lot to commend them and show an endearing amateurishness compared with the towering musical achievements which were to come as Richard Thompson perfected his technique. I saw them at Cambridge Corn exchange in 1969 (I think) with Yes and Eclection, and although they were doing this material I can't remember if they had Judy or Sandy singing or neither. Unfortunately my feelings about Trevor Lucas are affected by what happened to Sandy, so my review of Fotheringay 2 might be a bit jaundiced. A word for Jack O'Diamonds ... Read More:

I have only recently (last month or so) discovered this spellbinding and beautiful album, although I have been aware of Fairport for some time. I had previously confined myself to the eponymous debut album pre-Sandy Denny, as it was closer in feel to the US West Coast folk rock that I love. I was under the misapprehension that Liege and Lief, indeed Unhalfbricking and What We Did On Our Holidays too, were unlistenable trad folk horrors. How wrong I was, and I'm ashamed that I didn't investigate Fairport Convention - Mark 2 with Sandy a lot sooner. But the very essence of being an avid music collector and appreciator is discovering jewels you haven't come across before, and fast approaching 40 years old I am relieved and happy that albums like Liege and Lief can still find their way into my world ... This is the best single CD introduction to Fairport Convention that you are likely to come across, and covers their golden years from 'What We Did on Our Holidays' through 'Babbacombe Lee' as well as is possible, in my opinion.

Of course, once you have this, you'll probably want to start collecting all the original albums .. even their 'not best of' tracks are generally worth listening to.

By the time Sandy Denny returned to the fold for this album, Richard Thompson had left and Dave Swarbrick had become the focus for the Fairport sound. Consequently, there's a feeling that occasionally the vision of Denny and Swarb clashed on this album and the whole fails to hang together, with some songs like 'Night-time girl' sounding lightweight and hideously like fillers.

Denny's husband Trevor Lucas chips in with some good railroad type songs to keep the album moving but, when Sandy Denny starts singing her own songs, then everything falls into focus and you can forgive the band anything as then this album sounds as good as anything the 'classic' Fairport line-up produced. The title track is superb, and is complemented by the haunting 'Stranger to himself' but the highlight is the glorious 'One More Chance' ... Read More:

I have always regarded 'Nine' as being among the best Fairport albums, representing the brief flowering of the post Nicol/Thompson band before the return of Sandy Denny changed the musical direction again. The previous album 'Rosie' was something of a stopgap but had marked the arrival of Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue, both former members of Sandy's band Fotheringay, and on 'Nine' they make major contributions. Lucas's rich and resonant voice and Donahue's fluent lead guitar were completely different from their predecessors, Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson, but they gave a distinctive tone to a revitalised and cohesive musical unit built on the sure foundation of the three Daves. Dave Swarbrick's playing is superb throughout, and his vocals are pretty good too, while Dave ... Read More:

The true story of John "Babbacombe" Lee, the man they couldn't hang is the stuff of folk legend. Lee was dubiously sentenced to death in 1885 for the inconclusive murder of his landlady Emma Keyes in Babbacombe near Torquay. Three times at the scaffold the bolt was jolted but the trap door didn't open. Lee's capital sentence was commuted to life imprisonment where he served 23 years before being released to tell his amazing tale. Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention found a copy of Lee's papers in a Ware antique shop and was suitably inspired by his story to make it the theme of the band's next long-player.

Babbacombe Lee the LP covers John Lee's life from his youth to the hanging incident. It is folk-rock with the playing (and singing in particular) leaning too heavily towards folk in places for my personal tastes. ... Read More:
