This is even better than its predecessor. There's more confidence in the playing and the programme is especially well chosen, with its emphasis on I-never-knew-it-was-called-that tunes. Fans of the Archers will be pleased to hear its signature tune in its entirety. The whole programme is top-drawer but unexpectedly my special favourite is Finck's In the Shadows--I'd heard it before but this time the tune really got into my blood. Good to see this series continuing.

Music : Webster Booth in Opera and Song
This CD shows the vocal versatility of Webster Booth. Anyone who is dubious about buying a historical CD should have no fear as the original 78s have been perfectly remastered by Michael Dutton.

Webster Booth began his career in the chorus of D'Oyly Carte and although he left the company after three years without having progressed beyond the chorus, the occasional bit part and understudy for some of the leading tenor roles, his love for Gilbert and Sullivan remained with him for the rest of his life. This CD contains "Take a pair of sparkling eyes" (The Gondoliers) and "A wand'ring minstrel" (The Mikado), recorded under the brilliant conductor, Leslie Heward in the early forties. Webster Booth always considered these recordings ... Read More:

Music : Kullman: Serenade
Although best-known to record collectors as the tenor soloist on the first recording of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, Kullman had a wide-ranging career, beginning with substantial successes in Europe before settling into a quarter century of dependable performances at the Metropolitan Opera. Essentially a lyric singer, Kullman undertook weightier roles in the final stages of his time before the public. Born Charles Kullmann (he changed the spelling of his last name in the late '40s), the singer began performing in church choirs at age eight. He attended Yale University, graduating in 1924 after preparing to train as a medical doctor. Financial difficulties interfered, however, and he fell back upon his avocation. His having been a member of ... Read More:
