After hearing about this group through friends I had to check them out - a few expensive downloads later I had tickets to their concert and I haven't looked back since. This is a fantastic album from track one right through to the end.

Smooth lyrics, matched to even smoother basslines, piercing horn sections and samples adding that extra something. If you get the chance see them live, if you don't get this album. And if you like it, even just a little bit, explore some of the other brilliant music coming out of New Zealand.

Dont get me wrong I am a big fan of Fat Freddys Drop but found this album a bit self indulgent and flat. Dukies voice which is one of the finest around seems to go a bit pear shaped here and there too. It all kind of meanders and doesnt have enough light and shade, I guess you had to be there. I have seen them live on a couple of occasions and each time they were absolutely superb, great energy and performances all round. I guess I expected more of the same on this album but felt a little short changed

As an enthusiastic newcomer to and participant in "a capella" (unaccompanied barbershop) singing, I have been scouring the web to find good recorded barbershop songs. The market is quite limited but it was my good fortune to find this recording by the Freddie Williams Four. There is an excellent selection of beautifully sung songs - some well known and a few which were new to me. Barbershop singers everywhere will appreciate the high standard of close harmony demonstrated here and those who just like to listen will almost certainly be thirsting for more.

Undoubtedly this kind of music does not appeal to everybody but to those who are interested (and those who just like to sing along) I would give "Best of Barbershop" the highest ... Read More:

Freddy Fender's first records were Mexican language versions of Presley songs and he was known as the Be Bop Kid.In 1957 he recorded some songs for the Duncan label one of which was Wasted days & wasted nights. However his career was stopped because of his conviction for marijuana possession and he ended up in the Angola State Prison.
Probably prisons were less dangerous places then than they are now as Fender-still using his real name of Baldemar Huerta-actually cut his first album inside! Its now on CD as Live from the Angola State Prison
In the mid 70s he suddenly became a huge country star as the Duncan single was re recorded for MCA and made No 1 Over the years he charted around 18 titles on the country charts and a number on ... Read More:

I can wholeheartedly share Barry McCanna's enthusiasm for this brand new compilation. Fifty one tracks, very well remastered from a wide variety of sources bring you two-and-a-half hours of listening pleasure. The six Peter Yorke items, although all using the same formula invariably working towards the dramatic high note ending, are evenly spaced among the other tracks and remain astounding feats of musicianship on all counts: technique, beauty of tone and improvisatory talent (I have long cherished a 78 RPM of "Valse Vanité" / "Body and Soul").
Highly recommended!
