As an absolute Free fanatic, even though ive got all the tracks on this, I bought this and cant believe how Bob Clearmountain has messed up some of the most beautiful songs ever written with his ham fisted remixing. The beauty of Free was the simplicity, the soul and fire shone through, by all means clean up original tapes of hisses and pops but this is vandalism and all concerned Clearmountain, record company etc should be ashamed stick to the Free Story or the superb(if your budget allows)Songs Of Yesterday.

There is little to say about this album which hasn't already been said by my fellows here, other than to say that having to select tracks for a 'Best Of Free' album must have been the most difficult job in the world; it'd have been easier just to release a box set of their whole back catalogue!
Herewith, a taster, you will need more...

This album had immense impact on me having grown up with this band as a soundtrack to my early teens and later as a pro musician. The songs speak volumes and seem written by individuals far beyond their years - Apart from that, the album is a rock milestone and it's influence entirely underrated. Free were coming into their absolute peak with this record, along with Fire and Water, Highway, and Free Live. Everything about it is flawless, the cover, the production, the songs, and the delivery. Just buy it and hear for yourself, it's impossible to be disappointed.

As a long standing Free fan (probably one of the oldest!) I was really surprised to find an album I had not got. Well, I have now and it is superb. Yes, there are several versions of Alright Now etc., but they are so contrasting in style. It is a pure gem and I for one, will be playing it all day every day.

you gotta laugh at the fuss made by the media and the likes of the 'x factor' when they wax poetically about the youth of some of todays 'pop' stars - the members of free at the time of this album were hovering around the 17/18 mark, and bassist andy fraser was 15! listening to it now, especially in its re-mastered form, this is an incredible fact to get to grips with. the maturity on offer in the musicianship, songwriting and downright FEEL is quite staggering. can you imagine the likes of (god help us!) mcfly or my chemical romance coming up with something as effortlessly cool and powerful as this? kids today in 'rock' music really do sound (and look) their ages. back in the day this just wasnt the case. and free were not the only young band around. all the giant rock ... I was there for the Sunderland gig, remember they had problems with the audience mike although you wouldn't think so listening to this. Nice to see more tracks from Sunderland on Remastered.
Sad thing is I don't think Free realised how good they were - just buy it!

Wow. I first heard this when I was 17 in the spring of 1977 when punk rock was exploding all around me & it has remained my favourite album bar none for the last 31 years.

Until hearing this masterpiece, I had encountered Free via airplay of All Right Now, My Brother Jake, Wishing Well etc but this takes you to an altogether different plane. There are so many gaps in the music that you are just dragged through them; Rodgers is at his glorious best & although Kossoff is credited as being a session player, his replacement so gifted that, even now, I still have to check the album sleeve to see which tracks he's on. Kirke's drumming is as sparse & effective as ever. What also makes this album different is the involvment of session men like Tetsu, Rabbit etc who helped to create ... Read More:

This album was the penultimate of Free's very short career and irrespective of the other reviews detailed here, it's worth buying alone for the last song on the original album, "Goodbye". The line 'don't waste your time on hate, can be used in better ways' is one to savour and the sparse arrangements (as always, Kossoff worked on the 'less is more' principle) as usual worked.

Along with the single "Little Bit Of Love", whilst not as good as my second favourite single of all time "My Brother Jake" (Bobby Darin's "Mack The Knife" being my absolute favourite), this was a great 3 minute pop/rock single.

Along with "Travellin' Man", "Child", "Guardian Of The Universe" and a couple of other minor tracks - perhaps even album fillers - there is enough here to wax lyrical about and ponder ... Read More:

The songs, the feel and the playing on Highway are truely outstanding.

Slagged off that it wasn't a suitable follow up to Fire & Water -what utter crap / media blindness!!!! Like Revolver outstrips Pepper so this outstrips Fire & W -single and all.

Before you die, you MUST listen to Be my Friend, Love you so, Highway Song and Bodie
