Anybody reading this knows who The Fugs are and most likely owns their first two albums already on CD (or LP). It certainly was a nice idea to release more unreleased material, which is featured on Disc 3 and Disc 4, but what's the story on reissuing The Fugs First Album and the self-titled, second album, The Fugs, as Disc 1 and Disc 2? Paying big money like this for a boxed set that features 2 already released CDs is not a great bargain. And after reading the liner notes, it becomes obvious it didn't have to be this way. Ed Sanders writes that he listened to hundreds of hours of unreleased material to gather material for this set. In reality the First album with a bit of Virgin Fugs and a few odd other bits thrown in. Always essential but a real shame that the rest of Virgin Fugs is missing, so minus a star for that. Both albums plus the extras in the one CD set would have been a better idea.

In reality the First album with a bit of Virgin Fugs and a few odd other bits thrown in. Always essential but a real shame that the rest of Virgin Fugs is missing, so minus a star for that. Both albums plus the extras in the one CD set would have been a better idea.

I'm not objective about these guys at all, in my book it just doesn't get any better than this, The highlight is "I'm a mutant" a proof of Ed Sanders humour and sexual liberation. Also Tuli's "morning morning" and "kill for peace" all classics. I could rave all evening about The Fugs. I could also write 500 mails a day to Ed and Tuli just saying thanks. My heroes! My Favourite band! and yes! they even hail the great group groupe on this album...

Back in 1968 I and a couple of friends were competing to bring home the weirdest records by the strangest, hairiest and most subversive bands we could find. We came up with the Mothers of Invention, Van Dyke Parks, Silver Apples and a whole lot of others, but way up there on the higher register of the weirdness scale were the Fugs, particularly with their LPs "Tenderness Junction" and "It Crawled into My Hand, Honest". The Fug's earliest records from 1965 onwards were raw proto-punk folk rants with a distinct underground anti-establishment slant. They broke the F-word barrier on vinyl long before Frank Zappa. Fug is not a name that is common in todays language. In fact I don't think it is in the Dictionary. (If so then please tell me). But if it was in the dictionary then Fug would be described as a band that likes to blend influences of house, jazz, and classical strings and vocals. With it adding, please look at Bent and Zero 7 for alternatives. This is a great album that features all of above. RFO is one of the stand out tracks for me as it has a really good beat and gliding classical strings that flow from from one to wave to another.
