I have to say that this box set was a joy to behold. Not only was the re-mastered music absolutely fantastic, but also the added visuals were a delight. It does beg the question, where have they been hiding these films all these years? OK, so one or two of them are looking a little bit flaky with age, but isn't that the effect ageing has? How does the DVD of the early seventies 'Yessongs' look in 2008, after all? And where else will you see such fanastic material anyway?

Moreover, what these sounds and visuals show to me is that in losing Gabriel and Hackett (the latter has been criminally underated for decades in this listener's view) the band lost not merely two members, but a third of their very creativity, and were never the ... Read More:

This collection is well put together and well packaged and it does all the right things. The only thing it does wrong is try to please all the people all the time.
Let's face it Genesis have been at least three different bands. It argueable that there have been more incarnations but let's agree on three for the sake of simplicity. The early work with Gabriel and Hackett that is an was of its time Trespass, Foxtrot et al up to Lamb Lies down. The early Collins singing days of Rutherford and Banks 'Then there were three' Wind & Wuthering when I think they did some excellent work. And then the Pop Band.
Perhaps I am simplyfying too much. The odd gem appears out of context of course, 'Duke' or parts of same I can cite as an obvious example. ... Read More:

Firstly, I'd like to say that this is one of the best sounding live albums ever. I've read that there was a little bit of post production shenanigans, overdubbing and the like, but it really doesn't matter - the sound quality is superb, it sounds live but doesn't have that awful "distant" feeling a lot of live albums seem to have. Steve Hackett's guitar in particular has a beautiful creamy tone - one of my favourite guitar sounds ever.

The album was a recording of a tour made to promote "Wind and Wuthering", and contains many tracks spanning the career of Genesis up to that point, including the Gabriel era. This of course means that Phil Collins will be attempting to sing some of these early pieces. I should admit straight away that I am no fan ... Read More:

Its a job to know to review this, but the brilliant Carpet Crawlers
demonstrates what could be done to the much vaulted 'Lamb'project. Lets hope
it has inspired them to pursue this project, what we would all give
to hear Hacket and Gabriel again

I guess there's always one that bucks the trend! I was disappointed but only really because some of the reviews i've read led me to believe this was a masterpiece which really it aint. Double albums almost always have fillers - in this case a few too many twiddly instrumental interludes and a few tracks that just sound like outtakes - better production would have improved them. The best tracks, however, are sublime and there are about 12 of those which together would have made a great 5 star album. The lyrics are great, bit clever to nick from other artists (its only rock n roll!)but they nicked from the best(and i still like it!) but 'pound' and 'trick' are better.....

If you like Genesis and have done for a while, you will be used to the fact that they are not, and probably never were trendy. The advantage of this is that they never go out of fashion, and I still enjoy listening to this album after 30 years of knowing it.The first album after Peter Gabriel left sees Phil Collins step forward from the drums to lead vocal, and he makes a superb job of it. All the songs are good, some are great, there are no duds. The playing by all four members of the group is excellent, and makes me wish Steve Hackett had never left, as his guitar contributions add an 'other worldly' air to many songs. The stand out tunes for me are 'squonk', 'mad man moon' and 'ripples', but all of them are classics.Genesis at their original and best.

I doubt Selling England will ever be beaten, It is the best album ever released. Even within the context of the prog rock era it was unique, it's bizarre eccentricity and Englishness (Britishness?) captured a very brief moment in time that was all too quickly gone.
Music as it should be- great musicians, multi layered, great variety and depth, astonishingly creative, wonderful images- and Gabriel at his most compellingly enigmatic.

When this LP was first released -- in between FOXTROT and SELLING ENGLAND -- proper studio albums cost £2.50. This album cost £1.99. Impoverished though we teenagers were, the 51p difference didn't make the album more tempting. Instead it flagged the fact that, like other cheap albums at the time (CAMEMBERT ELECTRIQUE for £0.69, FAUST TAPES for £0.59, and NO PUSSYFOOTING for £1.30), the material might well not be to everyone's taste.

But actually GENESIS LIVE was far better than that. At the time, Beatles and Dylan apart, there were very few greatest hits albums available. The live album was the standard way, for a serious album band, to create a greatest hits LP. There is a small amount of banter between the crowd and Genesis, but largely this is a record of a band trying to be utterly ... Read More:

Nick Davis has done amazing work in the past. Actually, ALL of his work up until these Genesis remixes was excellent! Has he lost his touch? Why do these Genesis sets sound so harsh? I wonder what Nick's reasoning for this is? Does he even realize this work is much worse than what he's capable of? He's a world class engineer so why did he make so many newbie mistakes with these Genesis remixes? Too much EQ? Really? That's what interns do when they're learning how to mix.

It's not the compression that makes these remixes bad, it's all the console EQ that was added that makes them sound shrill and hollow. Lots of top and bottom end boosting going on. I know that sound well from my early days of learning how to mix (on this same SSL console I might add). I was trying to make everything as punchy and aggressive ... Read More:

10.Nursery Cryme by: Genesis

Music : Nursery Cryme
After being sucked in by the wonderful `Foxtrot,' album I thought I'd try another Genesis CD to make sure `Foxtrot,' wasn't just a one off. Well it wasn't; `Nursery Cryme,' is simply marvellous, a rock monster with a few folk passages thrown into the mix. For fans of Yes or King Crimson I can't recommend this album highly enough, with all the mellotron and complex song structures, instrumental talent and lyrical mastery you'd expect.
The opener, and possibly best song `Musical Box,' is amazing, possibly greater even than the fan favourite `Suppers Ready.' With great acoustic intro similar to `Meddle,' era Floyd and a huge energetic section full of great melodies, epic organ and vocal genius.
Another highlight is the classic `Return of Giant Hogweed,' a heavier song about plants destroying humans, musically brilliant of course. ... Read More:
