We are so lucky at the moment with bands like Calexico, Fleet Foxes, Lambchop and Willard Grant Conspiracy all releasing amazing alt. albums, but you can now add Giant Sand to that list as they are back with `proVISIONS' surely the best record of their career to date. With 13 songs it glides effortlessly along broadening the horizons of the genre with unusual panache and grace. For me the only criticism I have is that the first half of the album is slightly weaker than the second despite collaborations with Isobel Campbell, Neko and Papa M but that said it is still breathtaking if not a bit too traditional. Then comes the P J Harvey cover `Desperate kingdom of love' a track that couldn't fit a band better and from this point on the music ascends ... Read More:

Music : Chore of Enchantment
Over the years Giant Sand albums have all been excellent, but if i had to choose my favourite i would say "Chore of Enchantment! It has everything, the beautiful ballads, the funky "wolfy" and the grunge/crazy Horse on "Satellite" What makes them so unique is there variation of musical styles and the magical songwriting of Howe.
On this album all the tracks seem to blend nicely into one another.
Two tracks,"Shiver" and "Tempation of egg" appear on the "Selections Circa 1990-2000" Best of album !

Music : Is All Over...the Map
Can't normally be bothered to write reviews but someone's got to write one for this fine album. It certainly covers Howe Gelb's full range and is a lot more accessible than many found "A Cover Magazine" for example. Howe almost croons on the opener "Classico" and I thought this was going to herald a complete change in style. This thought was soon banished by the second track's familiar nazal snarle accompanied by the kind of country/grunge combination Giant Sand used to produce in the mid '90s on "Glum" and "Centre of the Universe". The next few tracks are absolute class; as good as anything on "Chore of Enchantment" and then we move into the kind of Spanish/Latino style found on Gelb's "The Listener" for a couple of tracks. The usual jazz short ... Read More:

7.Swerve by: Giant Sand

This is simply a great Giant Sand album. It's a crime that it isn't more readily available and I would recommend any fan buys this first chance they get. Style wise it's more like Ramp I suppose than anything else. Original, exciting and sexy.

This reminds me of a bizarre, brilliant "Pin Ups" for the 21st Century. I wonder if Tom Waits would ever consider a covers album as a concept. He should do if he hears this. Howe Gelb deconstructs Black Sabbath, Johnny Cash, and Nick Cave without ruining the tunes. However, one downside is that the Sand would sound amazing covering The Stones "Just Wanna See His Face". Maybe for the next album ?

This has absolutely nothing to do with grunge - oh my golly! ;-)

This is a clasic rock album in the alternative vein conceived by Howe Gelb, the great, lost innovator of American alternative rock. Countless current bands owe pretty much everything to him and likeminded of the period.

But no matter what genre ascribed to this album and Giant Sand as such (if possible, of course) this is a great rock album filled to the brim with rock, noise, country, singer/songwriter and everything inbetween-material.

Grunge? Yeah, right.

10.Ramp by: Giant Sand

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Ramp
Ramp marked the first integration of the alt.country sounds of the Band of Blacky Ranchette (another Howe Gelb project) into the skewed guitar pop of Giant Sand - with excellent results, which culminated in their superb Chore of Enchantment album in 2000. I just hope that some more of these early albums are re-released, as my vinyl copies are wearing thin.
