as the old saying goes{i may not know art but i know what i like}. i may not be an expert on spanish classical guitar music but this cd is excellent. track 5 disc 1 is 10 minutes of heaven.you may recognise it as the music from the film el cid.there are 1 or 2 tracks that dont quite hit the mark but mostly this is a fantastic compilation album and will satisfy most peoples needs. just relax with a bottle of rioja, turn off your phone and dont answer the door bell. you will be transported back to that little secret tapas bar that only you and your loved one know about. the sevilla feria 05 is where it takes us.

This album showcases Julian Bream's supreme ability to interpret the spanish classical repertoire as no-one else can. His extraordinary musical sensitivity and stunning technique allow him to bring this music alive, and to evoke the land and culture from which it came in vivid colour. The tonal range he coaxes from the instrument is incredible, and the quality of these recordings is particularly high.

The pieces attempted here are a varied and rewarding selection. A highlight for me is Granados' wonderful "Danzas Españolas Op.37 No.4". The introduction is sparse and lightly phrased, with a dancing melody and chimed counter-rhythms that build into a rolling, powerful theme, and Bream plays it superbly. Albeniz's well-known "Suite española ... Read More:

This series, produced by EMI in the days of LPs, is one of the great achievements of the gramophone - they rightfully belong up there with the Decca Ring, the EMI Callas series, and any other candidates you care to name. Together they provide a truly comprehensive survey of singing right through the age of recording up to the early days of the LP. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, only Volumes 3 & 4 have appeared on CD - the very earliest era of recording and the period up to the introduction of electrical recording methods that were originally on Volumes 1 and 2 really deserve to be heard again.

Volume 3, the collection under discussion here, covers the period from 1926-1939. This was a veritable Golden Age of Singing - in Wagner it ... Read More:

I listen to this album probably more than any other. I haven't heard these two seminal spanish nationalistic piano works played by anyone else, so i can't comment too much on the actual playing, but the music is fantastic.
Both works are very difficult to play as they combine out and out virtuosity with many other difficult musical skills such as cross rythms and the bringing out of inner parts. Alicia de la rocha does this wonderfully well.
I think these works are underplayed in concerts, especially the granados, the opening piece in the set is infused with so many powerful melodies and is a joy to listen to, its a wonder more people don't play it.
Overall i would highly recommend this cd.

Although Rodrigo is probably the father of classical Spanish Guitar music this whole compilation brings forth lesser known names and compositions. To listen to with a bottle of wine and close ones eyes one can envisage those beautiful Spanish villages amid wondeful scenery.

Dance of the Miller and the orchestral version of Dance Espanola No. 5 are a special delight.

A must for lovers of this kind of music.

As a devoted Hackett fan it pains me to report that this is not one of his stronger releases. In fact I would go as far as to say that in comparison to his other strictly classical albums (Momentum, Bay Of Kings, A Midsummer Night's Dream & Metamorpheus) it is (to my mind) the weakest. In a way this is a testament to how strong Steve's own compositions are when compared to this repertoire of mainly traditional pieces that account for the bulk of this album. Most of Steve's readings of these compositions (while demonstrating his incredible facility for the guitar) do not lend anything particularly new to them that you may not have already heard by John Williams or Julian Bream.
The recording of this album is curious too: there's a lot of guff about ... Read More:
