The other reviews on here concentrate on the music. Opinion is divided on whether this is a great record or a bit of a mess. My view it has some great moments but is at times a bit self indulgent. But then I loved the debut CD so it had a lot to live up to.

My main point is of a more technical nature. I believe that if I buy a CD I should be able to copy it to my mp3 player. I quite like to do a CD-R for the car as well - so the original doesn't end up scratched. Now clearly the 'music industry' would prefer that I can't do that. And so under the guise of providing enhanced content (a rather poor quality video promo which starts up when you put the CD in your PC), they make it next to impossible to get a decent quality ... I only discovered the Guillemots earlier this year, and had actually never heard of them previously. I now know what I was missing.

This is a fantastic album; I love the addition of big band music with the more familiar, expected instruments. It's a sound in its own league with lyrics which actually have coherency, depth and meaning; a welcome change these days.

Overall, it's very relaxing, and ambient in style in some songs. Vocally, it sounds a little like David Gray, but in terms of instrumentals it reminds me of Nitin Sawhney to an extent. Both of which are compliments.

A very modest, understated, underrated album which I am glad to have stumbled accross.

This EP by the Guillemots is my first taster of this fairly new band. I say EP because that's how it is billed, I think correctly, because it is a collection of singles and other material recorded between 2003 and 2005 rather than being a collection of songs recorded with an "album" in mind.

However, I am going to call "From the Cliffs" an album - whilst not conceived as such it has been cleverly produced and has that magical cohesive quality of all the best albums: each song sits very neatly in its own place within the whole; you feel that changing the running order just slightly would detract from the overall enjoyment. Take the opening and closing songs, "Sake" and "My Chosen One", both sung beautifully to an unaccompanied piano - perfect ... Read More:

Music : Made-Up Lovesong #43
"Made Up Love Song#43" has undergone minor surgery since it first appeared on the "From the Cliffs" EP. Thankfully, though, the added backing vocals and effects have merely improved on an already winning formula. Quite simply, MULS is the best single to appear this year, and by some way. It is the perfect showcase for Fyfe Dangerfield's diverse vocal abilities, and for the complementarity and tightness of the band's rhythm section. It is a three minute pop delight!

After seeing the video for this their latest single (released 29th March) I had to buy it. Possibly the most original and talented bands on the planet at the moment. I had the unusual luck of being able to catch them at their gig last night in my home town of Brighton and I was quite literally blown away. To describe the music type is so hard, but if you like a frontman with an incredible voice (Think a cross between Chris Martin & David Gray type voice,) but nothing like the same in terms of personality! Clear, crisp, orchestral, but also bang up to date, full of unexpected twists and turns in every song, elating, poetic, fantastic. Also what a lovely personable bunch they were after the gig. True egoless genius! Good luck guys....
