If you are new to the world of Guns N' Roses I urge you to go and pick up Appetite for Destruction and play the hell out of it. This is a good CD if perhaps you just want a mix CD for the car or whatever, but there is less of their groundbreaking debut album on here then I would have liked. Songs like Rocket Queen especially deserves a spot on this CD.

One of the most overrated albums ever. Why G n R were ever feted beats me. They were nothing special, just one of a long line of dire hair metal acts from Sunset Strip. G n R only differed in that they tended to rip off Aerosmith rather than Van Halen. Slash is a competent enough guitar player but he's added nothing to the canon of axemanship but Axl Rose has a voice that strips paint. Even if you allow for the hits as being half OK the other tracks are dismal, plodding sub Stones riffage.

Both are strong albums, but where as Vol.1 is in your face Hard Rock/Metal , this is more experimental, dare I say, progressive!
Estranged, Locomotive, Civil War are all GREAT, lengthy epics, with complex arrangements and musicianship.
A really strong, (still) modern sounding Rock album.

... and thus, inseperable.

I have a hell of a history with these Use Your Illusion albums, indeed with Guns N' Roses in general. "Appetite for Destruction" was the first `metal' album I ever heard, and it changed my life immediately. I actually first heard it while on stage in a school play. It's a strange story, and probably more interesting if I leave it at that. I actually heard it at a time when I didn't think there was any music I liked. As soon as I heard it, I knew that it was what I had been looking for.

Moving onto the Use Your Illusion albums, well I don't think there is any record I have heard more times than these. I've owned them on vinyl, tape and CD. There was one two week holiday when I went to Scotland with my parents, and they ... Read More:

This album has something for everyone (even racists, if you thing about "One in A Million"), but generally was partially opportunistic (releasing the EP - Live Like a Suicide) and another four acoustic tracks. How it would look to fans was very much parodied within the album cover which exploits the tabloid nature of their press at the time. The songs are all solid, even the acoustic version of "Your crazy" generally seems to work better than the electric version. 'Patience' is a fantastic song which, at the time really showed people some of the potential range and scope of the band. "Used to Love Her" is very tongue in cheek and reminds me of the feel of "No Expectations" by the Rolling Stones. Signalled the potential for the band which would be more fully explored in the ... I bought this album as it was the last one I needed to complete my collection and I was impressed with the video for "Since I Don't Have You".
Unfortunately after that song the album turns very bad indeed with another 11 songs to trawl through. I have tried many times but can't get to the end.
A highlight of the album is Axl's funny English accent on "Down On The Farm". I don't know what to make of the song but it's very funny. I thought Nazareth's "Hair Of The Dog" might be quite good as the Britny Fox version is excellent. Sadly again I was dissapointed and it is the worst of the three versions available. Duff also sings on the album a few times and his voice is just bad. I hate his voice. Axl's the singer not you. One last irritating aspect of this album is not related to ... Read More:

It shows them at their BEST on songs like Out ta Get Me and Welcome to the Jungle and My Michelle is just awesome, but it also shows them at their most over the top bloated self-parodying selves on songs such as November Rain(a classic, no doubt, but GN'R were meant so save ROCK, not Elton John for christ's sake) and the totally ruined funk-fest of Move to the City, what the hell had they done to a song that used to rock in the early days and was now full of overblown horn solo's. Axl took the blame at the time, his crazy ego and all that, but Slash has since admitted it was his idea, not that this makes it okay though, it still sucks.

There's also the heavily supported rumours that Axl re-recorded many of his vocal parts for this LP because he is such a perfectionist, so it ... Read More:
