This box should probably be your first choice if you want to get acquainted with the works of Ligeti. The recordings in this box are overseen by Ligeti himself, and they were supposed to be definitive recordings that after his death could show conductors how his music was supposed to be played. As detailed in Richard Steinitz' Ligeti biography, it took two record companies to bring us the complete authoritative works of Ligeti on CD. Sony started a series of cd's called "The Ligeti Edition", but they had to concentrate on the smaller works for solo instruments and chamber ensembles - they simply weren't able to produce the biggest works for choir and orchestra to the composers satisfaction. my album of the year for 2002. for sure im a mick jagger fan,but i never expected this cd to be quite so wonderful. outstanding. its no wonder the walking cliche, mr.richards, speaks ever more bitterly of micks,outside (the stones)work.it has been,(keith..doth protest too much), clear to most stones fans for a very long time,where all their strongest melodies come from,and this cd just underlines the fact. great tunes,some surprisingly personal lyrics,and mick voice sounds stronger than ever,all add up to my favourite mick offering since Tattoo You.other reviewers named their favourite tracks,all superb,(except maybe-everybodys getting high-which grates on me personally,but thats just me),anyway, i think the two mid-tempo closing tracks ,are for me,two ... Very good performing by Joanna, and such a lovely, no inspired selection of pieces! I really love this CD - BUT, the production quality really lets this down!!!! Don't listen to this CD with headphones - this is not overly critical as it really interferes with the enjoyment of this otherwise excellent CD. just a plea to record labels to get the recording right to do justice to the performer, and also the music!

I bought this album expecting something rather whimsical, for curiosity value as much as anything else. I was rewarded with a rare gem: it has since carved out its own niche in both my music collection and my mind. The barrel-organ sound suits Ligeti's bizarre yet beautiful arrangements so well, its mellow tones making even the more dissonant moments (of which there are few) easy on the ear, and the sheer precision of the instrument makes the convolutions and intricacies of the arrangements wonderfully clear. "Poeme Symphonique pour 100 Metronomes" is pure experiential music, but the continually shifting shapes that move through the noise are still evocative of heavy windblown rainfall, perhaps: closer to listening to the sounds of some natural process than a piece of music. ... This 4 disc set is in many way a fine introduction to the works of Ligeti. However, it's been bettered as a "buy first"-item by the new only slightly more expensive "Ligeti Project" box, which has better recordings of some of the large works, and also has much better liner notes written by Ligeti himself.

This cd is well worth getting for the chilling and imaginative performance of Chamber Concerto, one of Ligeti's most powerfully evocative works played far better than any other ensemble. Piano concerto is played brilliantly by Aimard, better than his DG recording. Musical language of the work is very similar to Ligeti's Etudes, very complex and exciting if not so compelling as Chamber Concerto.

What a really fine CD. The music is so expressive with wonderful haunting melodies, especially in the 2nd movements of the Piano and Violin Concertos. The playing by the soloists and the orcherstra, under the guidance of Pierre Boulez, is superb. A real must for Ligeti fans.

I can't think of many piano recordings with as much energy, clarity or virtuosity as this one. Each etude sounds beautiful (enormous challenges aside). This music deserves to be better known. The Musica Ricecarta is a much earlier work but sounds good coupled with these etudes. In some ways there IS an absense of passion here, the music doesn't sound particularly dangerous but the superb energy makes these pieces sound so breathtaking, so celebratory that I don't mind at all. Rather it will be nice when another pianist as good as Pierre-Lauren Aimard records this repertoire so that we can compare the two. If you haven't heard Ligeti before be prepared for cross rhythms, African rhythms, violence alla The Rite of Spring, tenderness but above all fabulous ... Read More:
