Hefner have the quintasentially british quality, that they can make the saddest moments of life funny, and never was it more evident than on this album. Songs of heartbreak and despair, that cant help but make you smile. Highlights for me are the sensational 'hymn for the ciggaretes', the epic 'dont flake out on me', and the hilarious yet tragic 'I love only you', but this is a perfect album, not one song goes amiss and It makes me so happy to listen to. I have to admit that the first time i listened to 'We Love the City' i was unimpressed. It just didnt sound like the Hefner i'd grown to love on 'Breaking God's Heart', 'The Fidelity Wars' and 'Boxing Hefner'. I still think that it takes longer to grow on you than the other 3, but saying that - this is Hefner we're talking about and it only took a couple of listens to get me hooked. Hayman's lyrics are as thoughtful as they have ever been and tracks like 'The Day the Thatcher Dies' leave you singing all day and wanting more, while the beauty of the singles, 'The Good Fruit' and 'The Greedy Ugly People' aswell as 'Kissing and Painting' will leave you smiling at their sweetness. Why did I wait so long before buying a Hefner CD? I had heard and already loved "The Hymn for the Cigarettes", "The Hymn for the Alcohol", "Pull Yourself Together" and "Painting and Kissing". Indeed they are four of the strongest songs on here, but in a collection of 20 tracks I wasn't expecting such a large number of gems. "The Day that Thatcher Dies" always makes me laugh (although I know I shouldn't!) and so many of the others are good. Very few weaker songs. The mix of humour and pathos in the lyrics is perfect. I generally don't listen closely to lyrics, but Hefher (like Billy Bragg, among others) makes me listen to and enjoy the lyrics as well as the music.

Hefner's fourth studio album in as many years is the first to make a major departure from their original guitar led sound, and is all the better for it. In all honesty, the excellent and varied We Love The City had taken that path as far as it could go, providing their most accessible and pop moment to date. The only thing wrong with that marvellous LP was that - if you had the previous ones - you could hear some of the songs being repeated, albeit with different instrumentation and lyrics. Dead Media is laden with keyboards and synthesizers, and this change of tack has helped reintroduce originality to Darren Hayman's songwriting. This CD starts well & is mostly nice enough but it's a bit soulless & home-made sounding. The rhythm tracks are too wooden and the production rather 'dry'. The vocal tracks don't quite come off either. Shame because the singer has a nice voice.

This single will grow on you, I promise, and you will end up humming it at inopportune moments. To avid Hefner fans, this single will on first listening be a bitter disappointment. You will wonder if it is the same band. Hefner have progressed from primarily guitar-led indie tunes to a strange world of synth-based spacepop reminiscent at times of Dazzle Ships era OMD. A second listening will be only marginally more rewarding and leave you thinking "What on earth is Darren Hayman up to? And what's with this frankly unhealthy obsession with the fourth man on the moon?". Unlike his subject matter, you may well be thinking of giving up & giving in.
