Music : Residue
This CD starts well & is mostly nice enough but it's a bit soulless & home-made sounding. The rhythm tracks are too wooden and the production rather 'dry'. The vocal tracks don't quite come off either.

Shame because the singer has a nice voice.

Music : The Hefner Brain
More smalltown tales of life, love and heartache from Hefner.Including four new tracks this value for money single leads with a version of When The Angels Play Their Drum Machine taken from last year's Dead Media album.
Hefner's Essex boy Darren Hayman once rivalled Jarvis for wry and everyday observations. When The Angels... tells of a dirty weekend away with Hayman singing:
"Please draw the curtains, unplug the phone.Let's mess the sheets up and give our hearts a home..."
The detached delivery and simple synthesised sound is disappointing.Hefner must try harder than this or newcomers like Cinerama will move into their offbeat pop niche.

I have to admit that the first time i listened to 'We Love the City' i was unimpressed. It just didnt sound like the Hefner i'd grown to love on 'Breaking God's Heart', 'The Fidelity Wars' and 'Boxing Hefner'. I still think that it takes longer to grow on you than the other 3, but saying that - this is Hefner we're talking about and it only took a couple of listens to get me hooked. Hayman's lyrics are as thoughtful as they have ever been and tracks like 'The Day the Thatcher Dies' leave you singing all day and wanting more, while the beauty of the singles, 'The Good Fruit' and 'The Greedy Ugly People' aswell as 'Kissing and Painting' will leave you smiling at their sweetness. The additional vocals of Amelia Fletcher add a unique and new quality ... Read More:

Hefner have the quintasentially british quality, that they can make the saddest moments of life funny, and never was it more evident than on this album. Songs of heartbreak and despair, that cant help but make you smile. Highlights for me are the sensational 'hymn for the ciggaretes', the epic 'dont flake out on me', and the hilarious yet tragic 'I love only you', but this is a perfect album, not one song goes amiss and It makes me so happy to listen to. Genious

This single will grow on you, I promise, and you will end up humming it at inopportune moments.

To avid Hefner fans, this single will on first listening be a bitter disappointment. You will wonder if it is the same band. Hefner have progressed from primarily guitar-led indie tunes to a strange world of synth-based spacepop reminiscent at times of Dazzle Ships era OMD.

A second listening will be only marginally more rewarding and leave you thinking "What on earth is Darren Hayman up to? And what's with this frankly unhealthy obsession with the fourth man on the moon?". Unlike his subject matter, you may well be thinking of giving up & giving in.

But trust me - persevere and you will be rewarded with a truly memorable ... Read More:

This new single, from the forthcoming abum "Dead Media", is just fantastic. All analogue synths and drum machines, it is a far dry from the (slightly) overproduced "We Love The City", and is a beautiful tale of Al Bean, fourth man on the moon. Plus, excellent b-sides, in the tradition of all hefner singles.

Music : Boxing Hefner [VINYL]
It might seem a tad presumptuous for a band of Hefner's modest stature to release a B-sides/rarity collection after only two proper albums. Unlike the Smiths during their short career, Hefner often includes its A-sides on the albums; however, like the Smiths, Hefner saves some of its best material for the flip sides, which is a shame for Americans who have to shell out import dollars for a few extra songs. Until now, that is. Although recorded over a span of roughly two years, Boxing Hefner hardly comes off as a mere compilation or, worse, a stopgap while the band works on its third album. Instead, it's the band's most consistent offering yet. Maybe that's because the rhythm section of Antony Harding (drums) and John Morrison (bass) has tightened its playing considerably ... 20.Breaking God's Heart [VINYL] by: Hefner

Music : Breaking God's Heart [VINYL]
Breaking God's Heart is comprised of a series of perfectly crafted vignettes - touching poetic visions of life as it is and as it is not. Haymen's voice quakes with the power of his own soul-felt words and a few songs here touch something amazing. Hefner do not get better than this album. The first cut certainly is the deepest and most enduring.
