Music : Greedy Ugly People Baxendale R [12" VINYL]

This doesn't sound much like the original Hefner. Seems they (Baxendale) opted to keep only darren hefner's vocals and create a new pop song underneath. It works, and sounds very sparkly. Shame it wasn't the A-side. Real Hefner fans might not like it, but it roks. Lots of synthesizers as you'd expect from a synthpop band and sounds epically big.

Music : The Hymn for the Cigarettes
I didn't like this song at first. The singing was too whiny and it didn't come up to my previous experience of them (the sublime Sad Witch). Then it came on the radio (John Peel of course) while I was driving home on rainy December evening and I found myself singing along. The lyrics are standard Hefner fare, dissecting a relationship, with regular mentions of cigarette brands. It has one of their catchiest tunes with a great chorus. Would be most apprechiated by John Peel and fans of lo-fi indie music with intelligent lyrics.

Music : Dead Media [VINYL]
Hefner's fourth studio album in as many years is the first to make a major departure from their original guitar led sound, and is all the better for it. In all honesty, the excellent and varied We Love The City had taken that path as far as it could go, providing their most accessible and pop moment to date. The only thing wrong with that marvellous LP was that - if you had the previous ones - you could hear some of the songs being repeated, albeit with different instrumentation and lyrics. Dead Media is laden with keyboards and synthesizers, and this change of tack has helped reintroduce originality to Darren Hayman's songwriting.

In many ways, Dead Media is most closely related to Hefner's debut EP, The Hefner Heart, than anything ... Read More:
