After reading some mediocre reviews of this album I was shocked when I finally heard it and it turned out that I really enjoyed listening to it. It's clearly a step away from the first album, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This album has much more of blues, kind of Nashville Skyline-era Bob Dylan, feel to it, and I personally think that their vocals work much better together here, whereas the first album often felt like one or other of the vocal tracks had simply been 'tagged on'.

All of the tracks on this album seem to gel together very well, and although there aren't really any stand-out 'single' type tracks, I do not think that this is a bad thing at all.

It might take a few listens to really get into it, ... Read More:

I can only agree with the earlier reviewer, the pairing of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan is a match made in heaven. Some unkindly dismiss Belle as the 'princess of twee' but not here, that's for certain. There's a strong sense of rhythm dominating much of the music, and wonderful arrangements; False Husband has a terrific Morricone 'spagetti western' sound, a lone guitar with reverb disappearing into some deep well, and then those sonorous tubular bells.

There's a good range of material, nearly all composed by Isobel, who also produces as well as singing and playing quite a variety of instruments. While the singing voice of the album is Lanegan's, it's definitely her project, and one that has real substance.

Bought this on the strength of Ballad of the broken seas, which I idore. Was supprised by what I heard. Really interesting with some tracks having a real 60's feel to them. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but I like it a lot.

Milkwhite Sheets is the rapid follow up to the Mercury-nominated album Ballad of the Broken Seas which Isobel Campbell recorded with her band that includes former Soup Dragon Jim McCulloch (who also worked with Campbell on his own Green Peppers project) and the timeless Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, QOTSA, solo act, general growl for hire etc). During the period when Lanegan was completing his vocal contributions for Ballad...across the Atlantic, Campbell was in down time and set about recording Milkwhite Sheets.

This album isn't that close to Ballad, anyone expecting a similar record should probably look elsewhere, it is similar to Ballad in that it nods to more traditional music and has a gothic quality. Twisted gothic folk maybe? Campbell was ... Read More:
