Jack Hylton led a show band, and his records were designed to appeal to as wide a cross-section of the public as possible. In that aim he was spectacularly successful, and this CD presents a selection of his hotter sides, augmented by three records made in Berlin. Liner note writer Jim Godbolt fails to disguise his antipathy towards Hylton, repeating his inaccurate reference to "frock-coated (sic),ever-beaming and baton-waving leaders" but his disdain is quite unjustified. Hylton selected his musicians with care, and the standard of playing is uniformly high. The recordings span from 1927 to 1939, and whilst not in strict chronological order it's possible to trace the development of the band, and in particular the change from a pumping brass bass ... Music : She Shall Have Music: 24 Original Mono Recordings 1925-1939
As an example of cultural philistinism, the axeing of the specialist Living Era label by Sanctuary's new owners takes some beating. This is a fine example of ASV's products; a splendid compilation, lovingly remastered, and enhanced by Peter Dempsey's informative liner note and very full discography. All of the numbers are classics, and but for the title song we proceed in chronological order, from the Charleston-based rhythms of the late twenties to the smoother arrangements of the thirties, as the quickstep and the foxtrot became the most popular dances. By some quirk of fate, track 10 (Happy Feet) is the Whiteman version! but this does not detract from one's enjoyment. The other point worth noting is that both of the recordings Coleman Hawkins cut ... Read More:

This is a magnificent compilation, which gives the lie to the statement that Jack Hylton was not keen on jazz, and only recorded in that genre as a concession to the likes of Jack Jackson, Philippe Brun, Lew Davis etc. (which begs the question what were they doing in his band in the first place?). There is a certain amount of duplication with the Avid CD "Turn On The Heat", but there are also tracks here you won't find elsewhere. Amongst the rarities are Howdy Quicksell's composition "Pardon The Glove", Harold Arlen's "Buffalo Rhythm", and Walter Donaldson's "Borneo". Special mention should be made also of "Grieving For You", which was recorded by a slimmed-down septet in the style of Red Nichols and Miff Mole. Remastering is by the late John R.T. Davies ... This compilation covers the two-year period during the early thirties when Jack Hylton recorded for Decca, having switched his allegiance from HMV in late 1931. He led a successful show band, which toured both in the UK and on the Continent, as opposed to others such as Ambrose and Carroll Gibbons (to name but two) who played for dancing, and that is reflected in his approach to the music. He also recorded prolifically, and covered a wide variety of material, popular songs, romantic ballads, comedy numbers, show tunes, and hot numbers. This compilation provides a good cross-section, nearly all sung by Pat O'Malley. Some were reissued on LP, but the vast majority are making their first appearance on CD, so this is a most welcome addition to the catalogue. ... Read More:

Unlike the first two volumes, both of which were set in the late thirties, this compilation runs from the mid-twenties to the very early thirties. Jack had been recording for over four years by the time the first of these sides was cut, and the quality of material was improving. Not that he was spoilt for choice; this was the age of song-pluggers, and show songs. Talkies did not make their appearance until the late twenties - reflected here in a Talkie Hits medley of 1930. The other factor to be borne in mind is that initially little importance was attached to the vocal refrain. Jack Hylton fills the breach on the first few titles (including "Mama's Gone Young, Papa's Gone Old", despite it being shown as Stanley Holloway) either solo or in a trio with Chappie ... Read More:
