Have to agree 100% with both reviewers here. I was given the CD by a good friend, accompanied by the words, 'I don't get it'. Well, I 'got it' from the first notes, through to the very last. A wistful album from an assured performer, full of inspired observations and layers of thoughtfully applied, multi-instrumentation and sound. It's one of the great pleasures as a music lover, to find something that surprises in both musical and lyrical content. Do not let this opportunity pass you by!!

The words ' a collection of spoken word monologues' will usually strike fear into the heart of most men, conjuring images of pompous, graying men hunched over a microphone, pouring their over dramatic, insidious stories into it. However, this may be the collection that bucks the trend.

Funny, heart-warming and genuinely quite good these stories give an insight into the life of one of Britains most over looked talents, and for those that do know him it helps paint a much better picture of a very talented man.

Perfect for new comers and established fans, and those those that are just curious, I throughly recommend checking out this collecting of funny, entertaining stories.

I only recently discovered Ian Rankin's series of books about Rebus and they are unputdownable, to subsequently discover Jackie Leven's music is just a bonus, to find them together on this 2cd piece of sheer genius is a dream, give it a listen and as another reviewer said "then listen again".

Jackie Leven's albums never disappoint and this one is no exception, lyrically, musically, and of course Jackie posseses a fine, strong voice, with lovely Celtic twists in his vocal melodies. There's a poignant hint of banjo here and there, blues, country and folk influences, inventive arrangements, and the worldly-wise wise words entice you into the songs time and time again. If you're a fan of Jackie Leven already, you'll love this, and if you're not, you soon will be after hearing this.

if jackie leven had had the breaks some artists have been fortunate to have got, he and his beautiful heartfelt , almost holy music would be at the forefront of the folky world today.
jackie may not always use language that is easy on the brain but his honesty and poetic skills are abundant on this wonderful offering ,
sad and lonely songs of soul searching and lost love , may not be everyones cup of puke but if you can imagine the archangel whispering in your ear that he wants you to join him on a fantastic heavenly trip to an ethereal paradise , then this is the album for you .
go with the man !!!!.

This is just a superb live album! For the experienced Jackie fan it's a real treat, great songs well sung, superb versions of Sacred bond, Poortoun & desolation blues.
If you don't know Jackies brand of 'Celtic soul' then this is a great place to start. Jackie sounds a bit like a cross between Van Morrison & Aaron Neville(indeed he covers Van's classic 'slim slow slider' on this record). His deep soulful voice holds you spellbound. The sheer beauty of Jackie's voice creates a fascinating contrast with the sometimes dark subject matter of the songs. This man lays bare his soul when he performs live. Incidentally, Jackie has a totally unique guitar style. It has to be heard to be explained!!

Do yourself a favour. Buy it!!!!

I don't know if Jackie Leven can dance or not, but certainly the man can sing, and he's a fine songsmith too. He is a quality contemporary singer-songwriter with strong Celtic roots which frequently colour his imagery and the texture of his songs. Earlier albums have won critical acclaim but have maybe been just too idiosyncratic for general public consumption. With "Night Lillies" he has retained his artistic integrity while producing a collection of highly accessible, even radio-friendly songs with memorable hooks and a big, beefy sound to back up his powerful singing. He happens to be a superb and inventive guitarist too. My initial favourites were the title track, "Empty in Soho Square", "Alvis Green" and "Universal Blue" (all irresistible even on first ...
