There are now many releases in the EMI 'Great Recordings of the Century' series, and this has to be one of the best I've heard.

The three pieces on this CD date from the 1960's and all have benefited from recent remastering.

The 'Cello Concerto' is a 1965 recording performed by Jacqueline du Pre (who else would you expect?) and remains today, more than 40 years on, the standard to which all other performances of this work are measured. I'm sure I am amongst many others who regret not having seen such a gifted musician play live. I've seen several performances of Elgar's cello concerto, and always find that the best are when the soloist totally immerses him/herself into the music and brings out the emotions from ... Most, if not all, of these recordings have been released previously by EMI, while some of them - notably the 1965 Elgar Cello Concerto - have proved so popular that they have been continuously available since their initial release.

Despite the inevitable duplication - du Pre fans will almost certainly already have the Elgar and Haydn concertos - this is undoubtedly the definitive Jacqueline du Pre collection, providing 17 CDs of cello works by a huge array of composers from baroque (Bach and Handel) to Beethoven and the romantics and modernists such as Chopin & Bruch. There are no fewer than 25 different composers represented.

The set really does demonstrate the versatility of the cellist, with so many works which ... Read More:

Of all Elgar recordings by Du Pre, this live recording is no doubt the most deeply moving one. The slow movement is probably the slowest interpretation, yet it never loses tension as she gives everything to express the heart-breakingly poignant Elgarian longing. Despite the almost fierce outpouring of emotion, this performance never gives an impression of vulgar sentimentalism, as the sheer depth of music making transcends everything else!

Barenboim's account of Enigma is equally great recording. No over-emotionality here, yet full of grace, magical moments and noble beauty presented in Wagnerian grandeur. The famous Nimrod is played most beautifully.

While there are some lovely pieces of music on these CDs they don't match the titles. When I bought this 2-set CD I thought that maybe I had received Vol2. or something by mistake as none of the tracks match the information on the CD insert. I decided to check by listening to the samples here on Amazon & discovered that they too are incorrect. Just to ensure I wasn't going mad I found the CD set on a US website and listened to their samples & they were correct!!! I wish someone could explain.

An excellent package. I particularly enjoyed the fact the DVD combines both documentary and performance.

The footage is, of course, dated but Jacqueline Du Pre's energy shines through, reflecting a love of both life and music that is, frankly, remarkable. There's nothing voyeuristic - though it is quite harrowing at times by virtue of the emotion her playing evokes. The content complements the film "Hilary and Jackie", by using interviews with Du Pre herself, which are particularly interesting.

The recordings of her performances are also excellent. I'd recommend it to all Du Pre fans and indeed anyone who loves cello music.

As its title states, this 1965 LSO/Barbirolli recording of du Pre's deeply emotional and passionate account of the Elgar cello concerto remains the definitive version, and has been continually available since its 1960's release, after more than four decades.

The recording is now found on many EMI collections and box sets, and for that reason I would recommend one of these alternative versions as they usually offer better value. For du Pre fans there is the `Jacqueline du Pre Complete EMI Recordings' 17 CD box set, and for the Elgar fan there is the 5CD set `Elgar Orchestral Works' (also including the Janet Baker Sea Pictures) on the EMI Classics label.

A truly historic performance, essential to everyone's collection.

This is a three disc set comprised of nine cello concertos performed by one of the most loved musicians of the last century. Included is her justly famous recording of the Elgar cello concerto, one of the most beautiful works for any instrument which in her hands sounds like a love song to a vanished world. Jackie's intense love for the cello can be heard in every note, as her soul sings through the music. No other cellist has communicated the joy in the Haydn C major so expertly. Her interpretation of the Saint-Saens concerto is also wonderful combining wildness with great delicacy. The Monn is seldom heard but has a gorgeous slow movement vividly performed here. Schumann's A minor concerto is perhaps the most beautiful, and features Jackie's best playing: ... Read More:

The title may be a little hyberbolic, but this recording is just fantastic, and is something that I listen to time and again. Du Pre is a genius and she shows her wonderful musicianship to great effect with both the Haydn and the Boccherini. I would rate this recording up there with her iconic rendition of the Elgar cello concerto. The three concertos never fail to please me and they always bring a smile to my face. I couldn't recommend this recording highly enough.

This CD is unusual, in that it contains many of the shorter and less well known pieces of cello repertoire. There is a wide range of styles, from the serene Song Without Words, to the lively Jota, this CD is well worth listening to. Jacqueline Du Pre's interpretations are lyrical, and her playing is a delight. I don't think that 5 stars can do this justice!
