Jacques Brel remains an integral and hugely influential singer/songwriter in the scheme of twentieth-century music; with his gloomy and orchestral tales of whores, sailors, tramps and harlots influencing everyone from Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Shane MacGowan and Nick Cave, to bands like Jack, the Divine Comedy and Pulp. Like those acts, Brel's music is literate and theatrical, unfolding in a bleak world populated by lost love, loneliness, angst, melancholy and despair, but with the darkness softened by witty arrangements, satirical motifs and moments of dark comedy. The atmosphere of the songs is rich and evocative throughout... so, like the work of his contemporary Serge Gainsbourg; the songs practically reek of cheap booze ... Read More:

I came to this album already knowing some of Jacques Brel's songs through English translations, and I suppose I was already a sort of proxy fan. Judy Collins, Scott Walker and others popularized Brel songs in the 60's and 70's, but it was still a revelation to me when I was given a vinyl version of this album and heard them sung for the first time by the man himself. All other renditions suddenly paled in comparison with the original. Compare, for example, Terry Jacks' 'Seasons in the Sun' with 'Le Moribund', or any of the many renditions of 'If You Go Away' with 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'. No contest! There are no dud songs on this album. Some of the tunes you will recognise, and those you don't will grow on you. Brel's voice has a biting edge which ... Read More:

This is a superb double disc set of the genius that is Jacques Brel in his prime. His style of music is best suited to the live arena, and there are many Brel classics here. His singing and phrasing is faultless throughout. The highlight is `Quand On N'a Que L'Amour' from the Olympia '61 show which is even more dramatic than the original studio recording.

If you have an interest in vintage French music, than you really should own this album.

Jacques Brel is the finest singer-songwriter Belgium (not France) has produced in the XXth century. His lyrics are powerful, compelling and beautiful. The word "poem" is more accurate than "song" to describe his work in my view. This compilation gives a good introduction to the artist, but you should not hesitate to buy the full collection (with text books) in order to get to know Brel's work. Powerful!

The records are only half the story, you really have to watch Brel in performance to fully appreciate his genius. This boxset contains three two-and-a-half hour long DVDs culled mainly from French television broadcasts of the early 1960s. There's no commentary - just a succession of unedited performances mingled with various interviews with the great man (optional English subtitles) - and, considering the age of the material, the sound quality is exceptional. Since watching these DVDs I've become a real Brel fanatic - I've even got him on my wallpaper! (that's my PC, not my bedroom).
