Having taken over the mantle of composing the James Bond movie soundtracks for the 90s (and very good they are too), David Arnold revisits Bond theme songs in this project, working with a wide range of artists to produce a set of really interesting covers. And the whole CD is worth buying just for the astounding first track - David McAlmont is Miss Shirley Bassey as his falsetto vamps up 'Diamonds are Forever' in homage to the queen of Bond theme songs and gay icon. After that you feel rather let down by Aimee Mann's understated 'Nobody does it better' - although listened to separately, this track will grow on you. Chrissie Hynde rocks out in 'Live and let die', and the Propellerheads do their drum'n'bass thing brilliantly with 'On her Majesty's ... Read More:

Bond aficionados will be only too familiar with the tracks that are missing from this compilation. The main title from 'From Russia With Love' is omitted (the instrumental), as well as The Pretenders 'If there was a man', from the end titles of 'The Living Daylights'. Sadly the list of absentees includes KD Lang's wonderful 'Surrender' from 'Tomorrow Never Dies' - a far superior contribution than that of Sheryl Crow's TND title song. Aside from Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies, the CD isn't significantly better than the 30th anniversary album released back in '92. Disappointing as well is the notable absence of the last 007 flick, 'The World is Not Enough' - especially given that the CD was released at the same time as that particular film. Don't get ... Arnold has produced a very good second Bond film score. The question has often been asked, 'Is Arnold simply John Barry repackaged'? To a certain extent this is true because the sound is undoubtedly Bond-esque, through use of traditional orchestral material, sweeping strings and use of jazz. However, David Arnold has produced this score in his own unique style. He has put his own individual stamp on the music and has proved that he is the Bond composer of the future. More so than 'Tomorrow Never Dies', Arnold imaginatively mixes live orchestral sounds with electronics and has produced some very powerful and exciting music. With this album however he has experimented more with audio properties of the soundtrack, using phaser pluggins ... Read More:

Kamen's attempts at a Bond score suffered much criticism and although it's far from a Bond soundtrack, a viewing of the film will help you realise that the change of style is not Kamen's idea. He was hired to make the film sound like exactly what the producers wanted: Lethal Weapon. This CD is yet another example of the mess Kamen's scores become when released as soundtracks. It's all over the place and barely has enough music in it to warrant as a promo, let alone a soundtrack. There are some exciting action cues here and there, lush moments with strings and Spanish guitars and the Bond theme is always great to hear but some moments are tough on the ears, which is not what I expect from an accomplished orchestrator as Kamen. Curiously, this is the only Bond soundtrack ... Read More:

Marvin Hamlisch was an odd choice to compose a Bond score and from listening to this disc it seems to have been, while not a complete failure, not a great success either.

The title song is great. Wonderfully narcissistic and sung well by Carly Simon. The instrumental version is very pleasant on the ear, as is 'Anya'. 'Ride To Atlantis' is another nice sounding piece but somehow doesn't really feel Bondian.

A third of the tracks reflect the Egyptian settings, those being: 'Mojave Club', 'The Pyramids', 'Eastern Lights' and 'Conclusion'.

There are only two tracks that can be described as action tracks: 'The Tanker' which is a heavy threatening brass inspired tune that does a good job of projecting the menace of the giant tanker swallowing submarines. ... Read More:

The 5th 007 adventure has a distinct blend of outer space and Japanese locations, so naturally John Barry would take advantage of this to the extent of creating a lovely Orientally styled score. The first five tunes or so are excellent, and then the last four (especially Countdown for Blofeld. Very spooky), but the problem in my opinion is the romantic themes. Out of the three I'd probably say Mountains and Sunset is the best, but these tunes are so slow-moving that they're almost passable. But stick with this CD because it'll bring much pleasure.

Music : The Living Daylights
The soundtrack to the Living Daylights marked the end of John Barry as the composer for the Bond films. TLD is his best score of them all, he manages to caputre all the excitement of the film and also the love between Bond and Kara.
Included on the CD is the amazing track from the Execise at Gibralter. This is just one of the many excellent piecies of music included. If you buy this, you will not be dissapointed!

This score/soundtrack to what is perhaps the most memorable of all Bond movies truly introduces Bond to the new era. The music is cleary seventies and combined with the classic Bond theme and numerous variations thereof is simply stunning. I urge anyone who saw Live and Let Die when it came out to get this soundtrack and acquire a piece of JB history. A real treat

It must be remembered that this recording reflects both used and un-used music, and many of the pieces reflect the darkness and somewhat stark nature of this film. Add to this the Monty Norman credit on the Bond theme {this dubious credit should have been retracted long ago} and you have an entertaining and mildly controversial treat.

10.James Bond - From Russia With Love by: John Barry, James Bond Films (Related Recordings)

After the excellent work John Barry did for the Dr. No soundtrack, it was no surprise that he returned for another stab. The work he did on the Michael Caine promoter, "Zulu", in the same year as Dr. No, merely backs up the decision the producers took.

Besides the main title, the other tune of note is "007". This would be reprised in form or another in every John Barry score and others too. Although it stands as an alternative to the original "James Bond Theme", I dare say that confronted with "007" people would identify it just as easily as the other courtesy of its repetition over the years.

Atmospheric tunes of note include "Meeting In St Sophia" (sic) and "Gypsy Camp" which, respectively, provide haunting ... Read More:
