James Brown was always a big fan of Christmas - in fact, he recorded several Christmas albums over the course of his career, including a rare Internet-only release just a couple of years before his passing. That aside, 'Funky Christmas' gathers together tracks from each of Brown's festive LP's, so fans can have him on the stereo instead of Cliff Richard (sorry, Cliff)!

This record places more emphasis on his soul work, and there are not as many funky grooves as some might expect. It is also surprisingly serious, even grim in some places, as James sings of Christmas in the ghetto, and trying to get by without a dime in December. It's good music to reflect to, and certainly one of the most original Christmas albums I've heard. However, ... Read More:

It's not easy being a James Brown fan. Currently, many of his original studio albums are so rare on CD that they are almost impossible to find, and instead of making them widely available, record companies force fans to buy armfuls of compilations by including small helpings of rare material on each one. However, the glut of compilations on the market at least make it easy for new fans to make their first purchase, and despite the disorganised back catalogue, further purchases are essential. Why? Because James Brown is the most influential artist of the 20th century, BAR NONE. Here's a quick history lesson: He invented funk, which evolved into disco, hip-hop, modern R&B, techno, house, trance, and every other form of contemporary dance music. They ... Read More:

A remarkable compilation from James Brown of unstoppable heavy funk classics and unreleased gems. Originally released in 1986 to capture the ears of the sampling generation, this compliation has now been nicely expanded making it even more essential than ever. Covering a period from late '69 to the early 70's, it is JB at the height of his considerable funk powers - suddenly the godfather grew from a diminutive 5'6" to seemingly become a kind of colossus funk godzilla, stamping his grooves over cities and leaving an indelible influence in his wake.

He was able to capitalise on the formation of a new band, the J.B.'s, consisting of both young and experienced musicians. For perhaps the first time in his career, JB took influence from the young ... Read More:

To rate this anything less than the full five stars is criminal.
This is THE bomb and James Brown dropped a lot of them.
It's an amazing album, a masterpiece of raw funk and improvised
jams.
The title track is a monster and one of the baddest slices of
funk ever cut. "I don't know karate, but I know craazy"!
Mind Power is another mindblowing track("Gimme some flute!");
13 minutes of laidback groove that is so cool it ought to
wear a cape and smoke cigarettes underwater!
Most of the tracks run close to 10 minutes, and 4 punds for this
is the mother of all bargains.

I'm glad to report (at the time of writing) this DVD surpasses any other James Brown DVD on the market.

This legendary performance of James Brown at Boston, just as he is hitting his stride is beloved of fans and has long been a bootleg collector's item. The picture quality and sound has been cleaned up so marvellously well (you can turn it up loud with no background hiss). James Brown's performance is nothing short of breathtaking and packed full of exciting moments. He gives the band directions integrated seamlessly into his tight dance steps. The band are on amazing form and the crowd have a mixture of excitement and tension caused by the death of Dr. Martin Luther King the night before, the intimidating police presence and excitement of the show. JB managed to avert ... Read More:

Listen to any pop radio station, and you will hear James Brown's influence within minutes. It grieves me that people raised on all that good 80s and 90s dance music, could listen to this and not realise how original it is.

James Brown wrote the blueprints of funk, then he built on them, then he developed what he had built. I have only used the word 'genious' in one other review, and that was about Aretha Franklin. The word applies here too in my humble opinion.

My fave on here is 'I'll Go Crazy' from 1960, a blues driven soul number from before the funk stuff. I've always gone more for soul than funk, but maybe you can hear the thick granite foundations of funk, forming in that driven insistant guitar riff.

This set comes with a double CD height ... Read More:

I don't know, but whatever I'm gonna play it's got to be FUNKY.

The spoken intro to "Make it funky" defines the spirit of this album, and of Brown's whole life. Almost all the famous hits are here, with only a few slightly ropy 80s ones in the middle that are worth skipping. Still, with getting on for 20 tracks, over half of which are classics, there's no way this can't get 5*s.
