There are now many releases in the EMI 'Great Recordings of the Century' series, and this has to be one of the best I've heard. The three pieces on this CD date from the 1960's and all have benefited from recent remastering. The 'Cello Concerto' is a 1965 recording performed by Jacqueline du Pre (who else would you expect?) and remains today, more than 40 years on, the standard to which all other performances of this work are measured. I'm sure I am amongst many others who regret not having seen such a gifted musician play live. I bought this a couple of years ago and return to it regularly - a sure sign of a good recording. I like the music of Vaughan Williams and this is a good example of his music. The Fantasia was a big surprise - its a lovely setting of some well known carols. John Barrow has a superb baritone voice. The Hodie takes a little more getting into but it is worth the effort. Both choirs and orchestra have good sounds. At this price you can't go wrong!

Henry Purcell's (1659-1695) opera "Dido and Aeneas" tells, in approximately one hour, of the frustrated passion of Dido, queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, whose destiny it is to found Rome. The opera is based upon Virgil's Aeneid with a highly compressed libretto by Nahum Tate. Purcell's opera includes three parts for women and only one, Aeneas, for a male. The brief opera is in three Acts. According to "The New Grove Book of Operas", Purcell based his work on an earlier English opera, "Venus and Adonis" by John Blow. With its heavy emphasis on dance and chorus, "Dido and Aeneas" also draws heavily on French baroque opera. Here we have a 5 CD set of Janet Baker's best EMI recordings. all arias/songs have been remastered and all comes in a lovely packing. This is a must have set for any lovers of the mezzo voice!!! There is also a great Decca set of Janet which I also recommed.

This is a marvellous performance. I'll say straight away that I prefer the Boult reading, which is very different, but I could quite understand others judging differently. For me, the Boult version has a greater sense of unity and spirituality without any loss of excitement or tenderness, and I greatly admire Gedda's Gerontius and the contributions of Robert Lloyd, who is a good deal better than Kim Borg. The sound is also more recent. But here you have a tremendous sense of commitment and vividness, and the unequalled Janet Baker. I have known both versions for very many years and have never changed my view that Boult's gives a more complete and more musically satisfying picture of this uneven but very wonderful work, but Barbirolli provides something which, ... I have recently updated all my Mahler symphonies on CD, but I realised that the box set I aquired did not contain either Das Leid von der erde or the song cycles. When I purchased this title I did not expect to be so moved by the singing of Dame Janet Baker whose emotional rendition is outstanding. The orchestrations by Mahler, and the interpretation of Barbirolli are exquisite, but Dame Janet is the star on this CD, her voice is so perfect, I would imagine that this is what angels sound like. This is one of the finest CDs I have ever bought and five stars does not do it justce.

Not good Enough for the Great British Public. Silly of me not to realise. A rich range, containing Home and Away, Sea and Empire, war and love, history. Should be a compulsory part of the National Curriculum. Bet there's plenty of stuff they could ditch that covers the same ground [or less] much more boringly. The music shows the man: one who knew his country and loved it. I didn't know the English had so many good songs.
