This compilation could be the right investment for the buyer who wants only one CD by this band. Featuring their two best known tracks "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" the CD is likely to satisfy the casual buyer. Containing songs from all their 6 studio albums + a couple of live recordings it gives a pretty good general view of the band's recording career. It will always be a matter of taste and a subject to discussion which specific tracks ought represent the various albums on a compilation CD. Why does it fall to me to review this? It's the times we're living in. Bad is good. Peace is war. Occupation is democracy. Well, here's the antidote to that. A dispatch from the anti-vietnam-war movement of the late 60s - Jefferson Airplane in their revolutionary political activist mode. Except that they by-and-large aren't, and when they are it can be very tongue in cheek like on 'Volunteers' itself. 'We should be together' however is an anthem for all time for all who want to see the people run the world. Often derided(especially by punks and people who have never heard them) as middle-class posers - well at least they were on the right side when it came to it, and at least they were talented(unlike the Clash for instance). This along with 'Crown of Creation' is the crown of creation, the highest soaring of the human race (Yeah! I know Beethoven had a few good bits but he always gets boring after about 30 secs). This is the album that really delivered on the promise of the astonishing breakthrough singles sung by Grace Slick 'Somebody to love' and 'White Rabbit'. Their first (first with Grace Slick) album 'Surrealistic Pillow' contained these singles but was not what I'd hoped for, though well worth a listen. But this is it! From the opening feedback screech of 'Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil' you know this is something different. This is certainly excellent value, with an Airplane who are definitely on song. But although it doesn't come between the listener and the music too much, the sound quality is a little variable; Jorma and Jack sometimes sound as though they're playing in an adjoining venue. Like another reviewer, I presume that this has been taken off a soundboard tape, and given that limitation it's very good indeed. But if you want better sound quality in a live performance from the same era, go for 'Sweeping Up The Spotlight', which comes close to matching 'Bless It's Pointed Little Head'.

This is too good to be true - a new Jefferson Airplane album with stuff that is up with their best. And the only live album that shows Grace at her astonishing best, the highlight being Lawman (silly though the words) which was sort of OK on Bark but scorches here(and Jack and Jorma really scorch behind her). I wasn't expecting much of this after the "live at Golden Gate Park" album which was for die-hard fans only (a very strange amateurish-sounding production and the singers often sound like they can't hear themselves - but interesting to hear different versions of their best material). But this is the real deal. I have to take the other reviewers word that this is from the same gig as the " 30 seconds over Winterland album " - for those, like me, who thought "30 seconds.." great ... Read More:

Press ganged into listening to this album in my college days in 68 and I have never regretted it. Each listening always leaves me feeling privileged to hear such a masterful piece of musical brilliance. In my opinion the finest album of the 1960s and second only(just) to War Babies as my overal number one.

First let me say that I'm not particularly enamoured with live albums. They tend to be a bit on the rough side, or have been overdubbed and are not really "live" anymore. There're exceptions, of course, and Bless It's Pointed Little Head comes close to being one. Aside from the ever-so-slightly tinny sound quality, what really lets it down (and this is going to get me into trouble with the other reviewers who have commented on this album) is the playing itself. That's not to say the Airplane were not good musicians because they most certainly were. And I'm not suggesting the performances are below par. The band really fly on these recordings and the singers are on top form. Everybody's picking up on what everybody else is doing, running little jams around each other and generally have a great ...
