The tenor voice of kenneth mckellar has alwasys amazed me for its scope, tone quality and also cute versatility. He seems so able to sing anything with such convictition yet complet sentiment and feeling, down to last detail. his range of song style is about as wide as it is posible to get; rather then a `fixed` style as so many singers seem to have.to put it another way, he sings the song the way it`s ment to be sung rather then to suit a style of singing that he choose. A perfect example is the LP. handel`s famous songs and arias: mckeller is the only singer that i have heard record handel`s-`ombra-mai-fu` with the introduction befor the largo also to sing `love in her eyes sits waiting` which is a master piece of singing and voice control. ... I've had this album for some years now and it remains my favourite instrumental album of all time. Although I'm no musician I think I can hear and appreciate good music, but friends of mine who play semi professionally tell me the work on this album is sensational. Jerry Douglas is my favourite instrumentalist (I've seen him live a few times and he has to be seen to be believed) and for me he produces the most expressive sounds in any kind of acoustic (or electric) music. My best friend, a bass player, says that what Edgar Meyer does with a bass is almost impossible. And Russ Barenberg (who I've also seen) has the most laid back style.
All in all I think this is Jerry Douglas' most consistent album -on his other, solo, albums, ... Read More:

This is an extraordinarily good album and is from the same label as slide axe virtuoso Sonny Landreth. Jerry Douglas is the foremost dobro player in the world today and it shows. The musicianship throughout is stunning and the styles represented paint broad and eclectic musical brush-strokes. There is country, bluegrass, straight-ahead folk and tinges of blues. I love this album. It's hard to believe that one person can bring so many textures and shapes to one album. The standout track is instrumental heaven, Lookout For Hope which really gives an insight into the almost visionary status of this supreme performer. It doesn't matter what music you are into, if you want to hear beautiful acoustic music then this album is definitely for you.

Jerry Douglas is undoubtedly an extremely talented musician, and has deservedly been hijacked for many songs from a variety of musicians.

This album does contain some great songs. 'Back In Love Again' with Alison Krauss is excellent, with a superb mix of musicianship and vocal talent. 'Snow's First Fall' is also a smooth, flowing, relaxing tune that blends all of the instruments involved very well and really draws you in.

However, what is wrong with this album is that there are some songs that just simply don't do justice to Jerry Douglas' playing ability. Songs such as 'Swing Blues No. 1' and 'Sir Aly B' were let-downs for me. They do require some strong dobro skills, but they just don't work with Jerry's style, so the atmosphere just isn't ... .... and well worth it. This is a combo CD of two early 80s releasea by Jerry Douglas, remastered, remixed and re-presented in a single package.

Douglas is arguably the world's greatest dobro player - possibly the world's greatest guitarist, period. Virtuosity aside, he is also an astute and sensitive arranger (as evidenced by his successful partnership with Danny Thompson on the Atlantic Sessions series for BBC2) and his musical direction skills come through clearly on this disc.

Die-hard Douglas fans will already have these cuts from the original albums but if like me, you are recently acquainted with his music then this represents an excellent opportunity to fill in the back catalogue with some urbane, exquisite and exciting offerings.
