Music : To Survive

For once an Amazon recommendation (based on my Blue Nile purchases so quite a tenuous connection) that was correct. I agree with other reviewer's comments about it not being immediate, but I had a sense from the first listen through that this was going to be a 'grower' - to me always a sign of quality.
The music's subtle simplicity hides a wonderful complexity you only get with subsequent - and if you can - quite detailed listening. I was lucky to get this just before a trip to Japan so immersed myself in it on both out and inbound flights. A pure joy.

My first encounter with the wonderful Ms Wasser
came in 2005 when I saw her open for Rufus Wainwright
at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London.

On that occasion I felt embarrased and ashamed that the
audience movement to and from the bar resulted in so much
extraneous noise that it was almost impossible to hear her.

Her frustration was palpable, as was mine.

Through the din however it was just about possible to discern
the emergence of a powerful new talent.

A year on and the release of 'Real Life' confirms my suspicion.

Ms Wasser is indeed a songwriter and performer of the finest pedigree.

She possesses a distinctive voice of considerable range and tonal ... Read More:

Perhaps it's contrary to hide your real name behind a reference to a forgotten 70s cop drama, especially when what you really need to do is escape the shadow of more famous collaborators.

As sessioneer and sidewoman, Joan Wasser has played and sung with Rufus Wainwright and Antony & the Johnsons, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Sheryl Crow and the Scissors Sisters. She's had three bands of her own, including the short-lived Black Beetle which she formed with her lover Jeff Buckley's backing band after his death in '97.

Primarily a classically-trained violinist, she's adapted well to guitar - from the fuzzy discords which rough up the smooth jazz surfaces of "My Gurl" to the weird syncopation and bell-like chiming of "How Come You're So Solid Gold". ... Read More:
