Having bought the single way back in the 70's when it was first released and heard what seemed the fashionable comment at the time that "some records were too good for the charts" I wanted to buy the album when funds permitted. No disappointments - this is a classic that doesn't waste a track. Different in style to other albums that Joan Baez has done but more than worth hearing and at a fantastic price. By no means all the greatest early songs, this compilation does include her hits and well-known album tracks from the 1960s and early 1970s. It focuses on the later Vanguard years when she moved into pop and rock. Four Dylan tracks are included plus her greatest commercial success, The Band's The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, a lilting melodious song about the civil war, her big hit from 1971. Farewell Angelina from the album of the same name is another gem, and then there's the civil rights anthem We Shall Overcome. Other highlights include The Dangling Conversation (penned by Paul Simon), the bitter Love Is Just A Four Letter Word and the stirring There But For Fortune. He might have been high, who knows? "WHO CARES?!" I love this album and maybe I love it most because he is so happy and playful. He became so angry not long after this. Well, we all did. Blame it on the times, blame it on drugs, blame it on the establishment. Who knows? I just know I love hearing the happiness, the love of performing, the love between him and an audience for which he could do no wrong, his old protest songs, anti-war and folk songs in the time just before he pulled away from the label of all that. If you only know Bob Dylan from his later stuff or his work as he's aged, you HAVE to listen to this. If you want just one CD that gives you an overview of Joan Baez's career and contains her greatest hits, well...you won't find one. Her career has been too long and varied for that. She was at Woodstock and at Live Aid. She covered traditional English, Spanish and French folk songs, protest and mainstream pop. Joan's is the finest female voice of the 60's folk revival and protest movement -- pure and melodious and true. This particular CD has too much Dylan for my taste. Good at the time, these now sound very dated. But that is an accurate reflection of the period. We tend to forget now that a great many fans admired Dylan's songwriting but wished he would leave it to the sweet-voiced Joan to sing them. My personal favorites are the traditional English ... This selection of prime cuts contains all of Joan Baez's best works, but some of the recordings are live. Warning: these songs are just as good, but you may have a preference of studio over 'live'. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a live recording, but misses none of the mood or flair of the single. "Please Come To Boston" is nearly better than the original and Joan captures the tenuous love longings with her voice. "Oh Happy Day" is given the justice and respect it deserves and "Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer" is still heartbreaking. "Diamonds And Rust" is the first cut and with reason. I've only had this CD for about two weeks and all I can say is that it's simply amazing. It is the first Joan Baez album I've bought and it certainly won't be the last! Baez's voice, in my opinion, is pretty much flawless on all the tracks on this - she hits high notes with ease, her phrasing is wonderful and her vibrato is stunning. Her expression is excellent too, even if she does miss the sarcasm that Bob Dylan intended on songs like, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" (which, by the way, is actually one of my favourites on the album so far). She also covers Dylan's "Farewell, Angelina", "Satisfied Mind", "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "One Too Many Mornings" extremely effectively. Having just seen Baez live on her UK tour, this compilation includes several that she performed, and other classics. Good live atmosphere with Baez's incomparable voice coming through clearly. Very good value! i recommend it.

For a detailed, in depth or more knowlegeable opinion, I suggest you read the other expert reviews contained here. I can only say that I agree with all the positive comments, where I understand the prose! From my perspective, I simply suggest that you dump any pre-concieved ideas you have of a has been folk singer, regurgitating old hits in a worn out voice. Because they either need the money or haven't twigged to the fact that they're no longer cutting it. So swallow your hip hoppin, house blasting, rap-a-tap rapping ministry of sound pride and be prepared to be amazed, you don't need to know the history of the artiste.
