What a let down! I bought this for Nessum Dorma and found that the cupboard of his repertoire is actually pretty bare. Other than "Just one Cornetto" there aren't any big hits on this album. Surely they could have included the 1975 classic "everyone's a fruit and nut case"? More importantly, none of it is in english so i've no idea what he's on about.

That said, this guy can sing, proving, like Michelle McManus before him that being obese is no barrier if you have a decent voice. With the right material this guy could have a big career ahead of him. Maybe he should enter X-Factor, Simon Cowell could make him a big star.

The subtle alterations in the characteristics of the main players, and the magnificent melodies make this Donizetti's finest comic opera, and a clear cut above the conventional Italian "buffa" tradition. Sutherland belies her age with a wonderfully convincing performance of the assertive Adina won over by Nemorino's persistent devotion. Her vocal line is rich and vibrant, with her coloratura flawless as ever. Pavarotti's tone and fluency are as magnificent as one would expect from a recording of him in his prime. His nature suits this sort of part perhaps better than the starving student Rodolfo of La Boheme, and he moves effortlessly from the comic to the more emotional, of which the famous "Una furtiva lagrima" is one of ... My title may seem harsh, and whilst 30 years or so ago some of these recordings may have passed examination, sadly now in 2008 they really will not do!
Lets get the good points out of the way first.
The first three arias which involve Catherine Bott,Emma Kirkby & Janet Baker could not be bettered.
Then we come to the exquisite voice of Joan Sutherland, who though never really a Handel singer per se,gives a wonderfully thrilling account, which has dated little.
John Shirley Quirk(ever reliable in a wide repertiore) does justice to the Rameau, the same(sadly) CANNOT be said of a glorious artist as Gerard Souzay;in the correct repertoire he was unbeatable, that reportoire does not include Rameau!
Another pleasing aria by Joan ... Read More:
