Total agreement with earlier (2004) reviewer. Bright, dynamic, lively playing, with all the intelligence and wit of Gould and none of the drawbacks, i.e. no vocalese, no strangely dry and unresonant acoustics. The influence of Gould is there, in the clarity and precision of the playing, but this is a magnificent and individual interpretation.
She has been perfoming the Goldberg Variations live recently, so I hope we can look forward to a studio version soon.

Very good performing by Joanna, and such a lovely, no inspired selection of pieces! I really love this CD - BUT, the production quality really lets this down!!!! Don't listen to this CD with headphones - this is not overly critical as it really interferes with the enjoyment of this otherwise excellent CD. just a plea to record labels to get the recording right to do justice to the performer, and also the music!

If, like me you have been attracted to this CD by hearing a wonderful piece of cool jazz from it played on the radio then beware. It is a strange mixture of achingly tender pieces (eg "Spiritual" & "Georgia Lee") played on moody sax and keyboard alongside what to me are some rather odd, rhythmic and raucus, avant-garde numbers ("Everybody help the boys come home" & "Up above my head" - well certainly over mine!). If the latter is not your cup of tea then be prepared to ditch half of the tracks. Out of 11 I rated 5 tracks as 4 or 5 stars and six as less than 2 stars - the average coming out at 2.5.

Personally I don't see how these two extremes hang together at all, but then I just don't get avant-garde music of any sort. So ... Read More:

Music : Moondog - Sidewalk Dances
This record has a powerful directness that can be missing from some Moondog collections, brilliant takes on the work of a much underated musician.

Not one of my favourite versions. Tempos seem sometimes disorganised, dynamics are crude (and often inappropriately violent), and there's little approach to cantabile. But then I prefer 'classical' interpretations -- Queffelec, Lewin.
