Antonio Carlos Jobim goes down with Lennon/McCartney, Gershwin, Amstrong as one of the most influential songwriter/stylists of the 20th century. To judge the album on its own merits is one thing. Getz turns in small but perfectly formed solos. Astrid Gilberto's voice is ravishing, complementing husband Joao's voice with that incredibly restrained vulnerability that is the essence of Bossa. It is an album of incredible tenderness and instrospection. The studio atmosphere is very intimate with an almost homespun quality. For me its a five star album in its own right. This has to be Stan Getz at his best. You would be hard-pressed to hear the Tenor Saxophone play this smoothly and with such effortless feeling anywhere else. I can't think of another Jazz Sax player who could have made this album. It is a classic. The lyrical input from Astrud Gilberto and sensuous arrangements by Joau make this album something special. A must-have for all Jazz sax fans.

It's easy to be over-critical on albums. Yeah, the damn language barrier means I miss out on any lyrical brilliance &, yeah, this isn't varied enough & has a fairly throwaway instrumental track, yet there's something so subtly glorious about hearing João Gilberto every so often (both the person & the album). Just a man, his guitar & the most delicate of percussive backdrops. Sometimes bores me, other times makes me wonder why I bother listening to any other artists; always great background music if nothing else, and I mean that in the most sincere way possible.
