This CD is a delight capturing the sparkle and fun of Xmas. It is light classical music at its very best. I play Troika and I know the festive season has begun.

I have to admit I'd never heard of Howard Goodall before searching on Amazon. I'm a fan of choral music, and for a long time I've had "find Mr. Bean music" on my to-do list.
I was surprised to learn it was by a contemporary composer, and ordered the CD.

It's quite a revelation; each piece is thoughtful, deep, and quietly masterful. I love choral, but I prefer Renaissance to contemporary. In just 24 hours, however, this recording has changed all that; a beautiful collection of pieces - I'd put this album right at the top of my favourites list.

So far my favourite is 'Palm 23' - I've never actually watched 'The Vicar of Dibley', so I don't to have to disassociate the music from a TV show. It's sublime, sheer comfort; ... Read More:

I agree that this is the definitive recording. Doyly Carte at their very best. I like the quaint dialogue and I think its integral to the performance and fixes the piece in its very Victorian place. For me the high point is Valerie Masterson's brilliant "Poor wand'ring one" - absolute perfection!

Those who know John Adams mainly for his cheerful melodies and humoristic details (think of the funny banjo tunes in "Gnarly Buttons") will be surprised by his more serious side while listening to his latest recording. The Darma at Big Sur (2003) is a reference to Big Sur, a region in the coast of California with high mountains and deep precipices. The piece is an attempt at expressing through music the overwhelming emotion one feels when setting foot for the first time on the west coast of America. This happened to a young Adams himself, when he fled to California from the oppressing musical institution where serial music was very much in the air. A six-string electric violin, played by Tracy Silverman, is the medium. The piece builds up beautifully, ... Read More:

It should be said at the start that this is not "memorial" music as you might expect. Even for the ever evolving and imaginative Adams it is unique. To me it is a stream of conciousness work that involves spoken and sung word, city sounds and orchestra. From this stream the listener will pick up on or latch on to various motifs. It is the words which catch you, hold you and unsettle you. It might be hearing subtlely mentioned the name of one of the 9/11 victims but most unsettling for many of us here in New York it is a few simple phrases. "Have you seen..", "Do you know....", "Missing..", "Do you have any information about...". To many New Yorkers they became terrfying phrases.

In the days after 9/11 hand made posters and notices appeared ... Read More:

If "Classical" fans are withering of this talent, then their comments are worthless!-Considering their fawning grovelling remarks over such awful SCREECHING HARPIES as Callas' endless grating and mundane Arpeggios. At least Charlotte can sing! I shall remain a devoted fan

There must be something wrong with my ears. I have heard John Adams's wildly popular Violin Concerto numerous times, and it has already been recorded at least three other times. But I hear little in it that appeals to me; it does not touch me at all emotionally. I can admire the skill and the complexity of the writing, but for me it doesn't really add up to much. That said, Chloë Hanslip does a bang-up job of playing it and if you already know this piece and want a recording of it you could certainly do worse, particularly when you consider its budget price. Hanslip's playing may not be quite as intense as that of Gidon Kremer on the first recording of the work or that of Robert McDuffie on Telarc, but it comes a close second. Her tone is a bit more slender but also ... Read More:

There is nothing wrong with this recording: the focal work, 'Shaker Loops', is a seminal masterpiece of the twentieth-century, and the others are well-chosen too (especially the lesser-known 'The Wound Dresser', a moving and introspective setting of Whitman); the orchestra is technically very accomplished; and, as always with Naxos, the price is right. The problem is that a work like 'Shaker Loops' really deserves the best recording you can buy; and this rendition, put next to the best out there (I'm thinking of the LCO and Christopher Warren-Green on the 'Minimalist' CD, currently unavailable from Virgin Classics, but definitely worth tracking down), this version is just too bland and glassy.

'Shaker Loops' is a real attempt to move away from the polished, ... Read More:

I was first introduced to Gilbert and Sullivan by my mother who, when I was 13, took me to see D'Oyly Carte perform MIKADO in Plymouth in 1963. From that moment I was hooked. At that time we did not have a record player, but despite this, I was able to remember the majority of the music and lyrics and a good portion of the dialogue and the actual staging.

In 1965 we bought a record player and at the first opportunity I travelled into Exeter. MIKADO was not in stock at the only classical specialist of those days so I parted with three pounds five shillings (£3.25) and bought this recording of IOLANTHE.

No doubt now that I was hooked, for despite the fact that this work is a very different work to MIKADO, within days I knew every note and every word.
