This doom-laden album, Nico's fourth as a solo artist, does not deviate very far from the style, sound and themes that made its immediate predecessors - The Marble Index and Desertshore - such unsettling, but compulsive listening. The dark, disturbed lyrics which explore metaphysical concepts, the distinctive, droning sound of the harmonium fading randomly and disconcertingly in and out of tracks and the continued presence of key collaborator John Cale (working here as both a producer and multi-instrumentalist) lend The End... a definite sense of familiarity. Thankfully, this proximity to her past work has not bred contempt. Her inspired cover of The Doors' `The End', the track which gives this album its title, is not a radical reinterpretation; ... Like Marmite, Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica and the Leeds United football team of the 1970s the music of Nico engenders a `love' or `hate' reaction. The reasons for such a visceral response can be ascertained by listening to this compilation. The Frozen Borderline 1968-70 matches the dark The Marble Index with its fatalistic follow-up Desertshore in a bleak pairing which is unlikely to earn the late Nico any posthumous gold discs.

Music journalist Simon Reynolds has stridently asserted that "The Marble Index sounds like nothing before or since. If anything matches it in mood terms, it's Joy Division's Closer". His judgement is accurate. It does share the power and profundity of that post-punk classic. Indeed, the dead-eyed `No One Is ... Read More:

I am a young purveyor of old music. Oh don't scoff! This album IS old! The time between when this album came out and now exceeds my age by about seventeen years!

With all of the CD releases/re-releases/remasters comes inevitably a slew of bonus tracks. I never listen to those. I always want to experience the album as it could be experienced upon original release. It is only if and when I become familiar and attached to the album that I give the bonus tracks a listen. They're only there for the people who loved it in the first place. They're there to preach to the converted, not the newcomers.

Anyway, I don't know what happened here. Perhaps I was too lazy to get up and turn the CD off after track eleven. Therefore, upon my first listen, I was ... Read More:

Even after 25 odd years, this album produced by Chris Thomas still shines as Cale's easy-listening Masterpiece.

Highly recommended!

I have been listening recently to the superb albums of John Cale. This one is my favourite of his albums that I have heard. Alot of people rate Paris 1919 highly, which is an album I love, but this one is the best for me. I have it as part of the Island Years compilation, but have copied the album onto a seperate disc so that I can enjoy this album individually without having to switch to disc 2 halfway through the 'Slow Dazzle' album [ rather irritating!]. Many superb classics are contained here: 'Mr Wilson' a lovely little send up of the Beach Boys harmonies and a great song to boot. 'Taking It All Away', which has a very catchy chorus, 'Dirty Ass Rock n Roll' still a favourite in the set today. My favourite John Cale song of them all 'Guts' with its hilariously crazy lyrics and brilliant ... Read More:

Songs for Drella is a concept album written and performed by Lou Reed and John Cale in the wake of the death of their early mentor, cult pop-artist Andy Warhol (Drella was a nickname given to Warhol - an amalgam of Dracula and Cinderella; he wasn't fond of it). Warhol had died suddenly from complications following gall bladder surgery in February 1987; it is said that his death caught Reed off guard. In Warhol's posthumously published diaries, the artist describes his hurt at not being invited to Reed's wedding and his gradual estrangement from the Factory scene. Reed, of course, notoriously fired Warhol in 1967 as manager of The Velvet Underground because, apparently, Warhol was not investing enough time and effort into promoting them. It would seem, then, that the two ex-Velvets have created the ... Read More:

A collaboration with Terry Riley that as some long
instrumental works featuring piano, organ, drums and various
wind instruments.
"The Hall of mirrors in the Palace of Versailles" is the best track on here. The short rocky piano duet "The Protege" works well too.
"The Soul of Patrick Lee" has vocals on it and doesn't really belong on the album-hence one star off.

If there is one good thing to be said about CD's, this-John Cale's Island anthology- should be exhibit A. All 3 of his Island albums plus a couple of extra tracks, in glorius sound, in a neat 2 CD package. It is among the most invigorating rock'n roll recorded in the 70's, a decade not exactly short of musical contenders. Cale's music in his Island years, to my ears, outstrips them all- yes, even his old buddy Lou Reed's work. Now this might seen like an outlandish claim, but listen to the music again, with the volume turned up loud. Some Dirty A-- Rock n' Roll !

9.Fragments of a Rainy Season by: John Cale

Music : Fragments of a Rainy Season
I saw John Cale on the tour supporting this album back in 1993 having had no experience of his solo work. It was the best concert I have ever been to. Just Cale and a grand piano or acoustic guitar, but the power of his performance left me absolutely stunned. I bought the album the next day and it has remained one of my favourites ever since.

Ther are some songs of true beauty like Paris 1919, Close Watch and Style It Takes , moments of pure ham as Cale concludes Guts and Fear with dischord and screams, and cover versions of Hallelujah and Heartbreak Hotel which Cale simply takes possession of.

Truely great.

I had this on vinyl in the 70s, and it's a glaring reminder that records used to have two sides. Side 1 is appalling, almost unlistenable - from Eno's squawks to the lumbering dirges contributed by the former Velvets, Cale and Nico. I think I played it once. Side 2 however is pure joy. The great Kevin Ayers strolls out to sing five proper songs with a kind of lazy exuberance and the sort of easy charm that only slightly posh Englishmen seem to have. The band are tight and the guitar solos by Mike Oldfield and the underrated Ollie Halsall are exquisite.

Some critics have observed that this performance would not give new listeners any indication of Ayers' seminal role in the British experimental and "progressive" rock music scene of the late 60s and early 70s. Thank God for that, I say - this is Ayers without ... Read More:
