This was one of my earliest Hooker purchases and remains one of my absolute favourites.

The track selection is very good - given the HUGE number of Hooker recordings, its often hard to find a compilation without 2 or 3 duds, but this CD is an exception (apart from Baby Lee, which I've never rated).

Throughout, you are treated to the great man's totally distinctive sound - his stark, plain but striking voice and guitar, all of it entirely unadorned and unembellished - just a great master growlin' and howlin' and pickin' the blues!

An excellent sample of JLH's work, and one that has remained a favourite despite the passing years and expanding blues collection. You won't be disappointed.

Let's face it, there are hundreds of blues best ofs and all are usually dirt cheap. While that's all well and good it can be difficult to work out which one to go for if you don't know the artist. This is particualry problematic when buying a Hooker album as he recorded about fifty versions of each song - some good some bad. Therefore it can be difficult to know just how good the cd is.

Over the years I've managed to work my way through quite a number of John Lee Hooker compilations and I have to say, this is by far the best. Okay, it doesn't have 'One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer' (for some reason every best of either has that or 'Boom Boom' but neither together!) but it does have the best versions of 'Boom Boom', 'Boogie Chillen', ... This is not the "definitive" John Lee Hooker-collection, but it is a good sampler of his classic, band-backed Vee-Jay sides from the fifites and sixties.
Hooker recorded some of his best and most accessible music for Vee-Jay, including "Boom Boom", "Crawlin' King Snake", "This Is Hip", "It Serves Me Right To Suffer", "Dimples", and "I'm Mad Again", and while not everybody will agree with the track selection (Vee-Jay titles like "Maudie", "Old Time Shimmy", "Time Is Marching" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" are all missing), this is a really solid compilation. But take a look at Tomato's "The Early Years" vol. 1 and 2 as well if you're looking for band-backed Hook.

Forget "value for money" and buy this album for its first two, quite superb tracks: "The Healer" - one of the most distinctive and atmospheric records ever made, featuring marvellously controlled & quite electrifying interactions between Hooker's deep chanting vocals, Carlos Santana's soaring guitar breaks and their wonderfully tight latin/blues backing band - and, "I'm in the Mood for Love" - an equally electrifying, broodingly erotic interaction between a very old man and a much younger lady (Bonnie Raitt) whose shared love of the blues makes the tension of their implausible combination permeate every bar of its vocal & guitar cross-talk. Breath-taking stuff !

As for the rest ?... a set of fairly standard blues work-outs with contributions ... Read More:

Yes!! This album is fantastic. It virtually relaunched Hooker (for the umpteenth time in his VERY long career) and certainly deserved to. Carlos Santana provides a searing opening guitar line, Bonnie Raitt's duet is wonderful and the closing acoustic tracks have all the charm of Hooker of old. This is one album not to be missed, even if you have never previously listened to the blues. Brilliant.

This great 1991 recording captures JLH with a galaxy stars in the Winter of his career. You might think this would be a recipe for an awful album -you'd be wrong.

From the first notes you know this is going to great. Johnnie Johnson's Piano (Chuck Berry's long time Piano Player) introduces us to "I Want To Hug You" and then that voice comes in. This is no messin' straightahead boogie. The title track follows with the Robery Cray band supporting JLH. This is my favourite track. Great guitar playing from Robert Cray with JLH refusing to be quiet in the background!

There are no duff tracks on this album, and if you like the blues there will be something for you. Oh this bliss....
