A more listenable and commercial record than John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Imagine has perhaps been over-defined by the title song. However, there are some great tracks on this album and a couple of (by Lennon's standards) also-rans. I don't like O Yoko much and find How rather awkward to listen to due to its stop/start structure. The highlight of the album for me is George Harrison's guitar work: whether it's the menacing and mocking slide on How Do You Sleep, the lovely accompaniment on Oh My Love, or the vicious solo on Gimme Some Truth, his playing really makes the album. The other musicians are in top form and John's vocals are great - especially when he's being angry, as in Gimme Some Truth and How Do You Sleep. ... Read More:

Albums like this are aimed at the kind of collector who just wants all the Greatest Hits from every major rock star.It was advertised on TV so its like Lennon for the Masses rather than an attempt to create a worthwhile product. It starts off well enough,chronlogical order up to the last track which straight away screws up the concept Though I personally detest Cold Turkey its got no place on here and was a Plastic Ono Band single anyway. With 19 tracks the cover of Stand by me should have been removed and replaced by one of the superb songs from Sometime In New York City-yes there were many but people never have minds of their own.

For an album that is made up of mostly demo's and John having fun in the record studio while recording earlier albums, this is actually very good and sounds like it came out of a proper session! As said, this album was made up of songs John recorded between Sessions during the "Mind games" and "Walls and Bridges" sessions, two different style albums, but what he saw as having fun from those sessions, results in this album that really grows on you, and takes you back to the VERY early Beatles sessions!

Engrossed as I was in Let It Be and Abbey Road and reading the tabloid press at the time of this albums release, could I believe my eyes that my four heroes would not be releasing another album. Yet four albums appeared. Yes even Ringo. Four albums that could have made one magical follow up to the last. Four albums where the solo aritists gave us their hearts and their souls, four albums that are still part of history. So to this album, the fourth leg of the chair. A masterpiece of simplicity with not a fifth beatle violin or a mono genius to enhance it. Plastic Ono? no John Lennon. Enjoy this fourth leg but listen to the others to appreciate what could have been. P.A.

This album was 'double' the pleasure and 'double' the quality! With two great talents on one album whose voices would compliment each other so well! This was one of the best albums from the decade that would show both John and Yoko on top form! One of Yoko's greatest talents shone through as backing vocals on two of Lennon's greatest songs: 'Starting Over' and 'Woman' - these would not have been the same without her! Indeed, we are indebted to Yoko herself for those songs ever having been written in the first place! 'Woman' could have worked with Yoko's backing vocals alone - ironically, a song that is complete with the two. Every song on this album is fantastic. There will be no other artist like John Lennon! "Watching the wheels", "Woman" and "Mind games " in my opinion the best records on this CD. Anybody who likes John Lennon should really get this product.

I know this collection can be a little pricy but if you love the work of John Lennon then look no further than this box set of studio outtakes, live performances and home demos from the Lengendary artist. The set comprises of 4 discs and a booklet. The discs are split into different times of his ten year solo career. The first is 1970 - 71. This disc is full of great studio outtakes from Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. Disc 2 is 1972 - 73 and features live performances, studio outtakes and home demos from Sometime In New York City and Mind Games. Number 3 is 1974 - 75 and that's Walls And Bridges and The Rock And Roll album. There is an early take of Steel And Glass on here that i think is far better than the finished product, great stuff! "Imagine" may not have been as groundbreaking or as superb as "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band," but it's certainly more listenable. There is not much that can really be said for the opening title track, except that it has probably had more effect on people as a whole than any other popular song of the 20th century. The way that the piano softly fluctuates as Lennon fantasises about a world with no religion, countries, war, bloodshed or possessions and invites us to do also, and then a lush string quartet - which never goes over the top and always stays in a tender and controlled mood - is introduced as John sings, "you may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one, I hope someday you'll join us and the world will live as one" to convict us that it really would work, if only we would all let it be more than ... This album belonged to my wife, as did her whole, then on vinyl, Lennon collection, and she played them, perhaps, too frequently. With the advent of children, whereas nowadays couples spank the credit card, with no such thing available to us back then, instead, we would sell a few LP's at the local used record shop to pay a bill or make ends meet. Of course, like a good many of my own records, her John Lennon collection gradually became depleted to nothing, until now. Older, with the kids grown up and neither rich nor as stoney-broke as we once were; it's time to buy a few of them back; and what an absolute joy it is to hear this album again.
