This is a great record of undefinable trips into blues and folk with a jazz vibe at times.
Great guitar playing, great singing, great songs and an almost mesmerising laid back atmosphere.
Nothing else I have heard by John Martyn touches this.
I love to hear a record where a musician so clearly says "this is my sound, and it isn't like anyone else"
He shies away from the "hey nonny nonny" of Pentangle etc and produces a genre-defying piece of brilliance which could sit equally in the folk or blues camps.

This is great music - it just remains for you to buy it immediately at this bargain price.

Martyn is perhaps one of the most erratic recording artists, a reflection presumably of the ups and downs in his own life. As is well documented, 'Grace & Danger' corresponds with one of these troughs, and has resulted in an album which is staggeringly perfect in its artistic and musical execution. The mid-section 'denial' trio of songs beginning with 'Sweet Little Mystery' are ones I return to with depressing regularity. They are sublimely beautiful, and worth the price of the CD alone. Phil Collins and John Giblin are the most wonderfully intuitively rhythm section,so much so that I almost forgive Collins for being both in Genesis and writing Face Value, but nothing is quite that good. This record is far from depressing, but is both haunting and quite, ... Read More:

Best tracks: "Dancing", "One World", "Small Hours", "Dealer"

Don't get me wrong, Solid Air is a decent, fine album; but John Martyn's best? It doesn't come close to One World, which is a total masterpiece and simultaneously the gifted singer-songwriter's most satisfying journey into experimentation and his most accessible too. Rock, folk, dub and ambient all combine to create a luscious, quietly funky, atmospheric and dreamy work which sounds astonishing turned up loud. The lavish, inviting textures of the opening "Dealer" set the scene perfectly; layers of riffs, funky bass and synthesiser gel seamlessly, creating something that's fleet of foot, airborne and stunningly amorphous. Miraculously, the title track is even better; ... Read More:

Released within eight months of Solid Air, you can tell JM was on a roll...and indeed if you liked Solid Air, you will love Inside Out too, as it ploughs a similar jazzy/folky/psychedelic furrow to it's predecessor...and (hurray!) Danny Thompson does the honours again on stand up bass.

It will always amaze me that Martyn has always been slightly marginalised in the music stakes. Many of his songs are timeless pieces that could and should be covered by lots of people, but the reality is quite different. Maybe it's because he stamped his personality so strongly on them...who knows, but Fine Lines, Glory of Love, Ain't No Saint, Make No Mistake have got classic written right through them. This is another great, great album from the man. Some may argue it's not ... Read More:

Although at first glance this luxuriously appointed box-set appears to retread old ground, John Hillarby, the compiler, has really pulled out the stops and unearthed some real gems here. Discs 3 and 4 are all unreleased live versions but the real nuggets are the unreleased studio songs dotted about on discs 1 and 2. How John Martyn or his record label could have left the sublime "In The Evening" off Solid Air is a mystery beyond mortal comprehension. I would go so far as to say that this box would be worth it just for that one song. Hear it and weep.

This is one of the best nouveau folk albums of all time. Still fresh and meaningful in today's cynical times, with a range of beautiful songs, simply crafted with total integrity. This really is a must have album for anyone interested in quality songwriting, singing and musical craftsmanship.
It still inspires, enlightens and fills my heart everytime i hear it.

When the artist remarks "Grace and Danger was very cathartic, and really hurt, I was really in love with that woman" you just know that this is not going to be a rib-tickling listen. Famously kept on the shelves for a whole year such was Island Records' concern for its content, 'Grace And Danger' is one John Martyn's most striking releases. Charting the demise of his marriage to Beverly Kutner, painfully self-knowing and -lacerating and startling after the jazzy world/folk of its predecessors, this nonetheless features strong material notably the title track, 'Johnny Too Bad' and the sublime 'Sweet Little Mystery' offsetting some of the more industrial angst beaming through the period production gloss in taut ensemble playing from Martyn on guitars, John Biblin on bass, and Phil Collins ... John Martyn's 1974 album carries on the fine run of classic early/mid severties albums which mark him out as a rare talent. A talent which has never grown dim despite the passing decades of emotional and physical decline which has seen him suffer Brendan Behan-esque alcohol induced torments.
Hopefully life in the Irish countryside might provide him with an anchor to cling on to.
Back to the album: It flows through the speakers like an aural river....deep and dark. Dappled with sunlight and clouds. As a guitarist Martyn is an alchemist. Tossing fire laced with honey from strings stretched to breaking point.
Sunday morning...strong coffee, newspapers and John Martyn. What more could you ask for ?

i am new to this record but by no means new to great pickin guitarists and blues singers and folkies such as davey graham, the jansch, john renborn etc... i am rather shocked and angry that i didnt own this album a good 20 years ago. its absolutley fantastic. it reaLLy haS EVERYTHING... wry humour verging on the darkest humour..."the gardeners"...absolutely mind boggling picking/guitar work..a beautiful tone in the voice...nicely simply recorded...the flute can seem twee at times but...it was 1968..but at least theres no beatnik throttling a sitar.
i agree all around with the others here. "seven black roses" is phenomanal....excuse my spelling i am too excited...the picking so fast and staunchly rhythmic that, solid i mean, that he does the job of a drummer... and ithink no one before ... Read More:

All the recent Martyn remasters have come up a treat. It's amazing how much care was put into those albums - says so much about Island, and its quality control in the 70's.
If you only have 3 of his albums (you need more than one to get the idea of the man's talent), I'd suggest this one, Solid Air and Grace & Danger.
One minor gripe - I'm almost positive that the correct version of Dealer (as it appeared on the original vinyl) is version #2 on cd2 - the intro on the version that appears on cd1 is way too short.
