Where is 'Greeny'? I just can't believe it. The most stunning, emotional bluesy Peter Green song and it is not on this otherwise brilliant album. I now have to dig deeper and purchase the double CD version which is quite a bit more expensive just for this one track alone.
Why, oh why, oh why?

I bought this on vinyl (twice! I wore one out) and on CD (albeit in original format without the 2 extra tracks). This album ranks with the Beano one as a 60s classic: Mick Taylor is brilliant (and still only 20 years old - downhill from now on....) and the whole thing is a masterpiece of ensemble playing. I find myself coming back to it regularly, nearly 40 years on.

One friend described it as a perfect record for making love - rumbustious start, mood switches through the middle, and a drawn-out langourous ending. Never tried it, but I can see where he was coming from.

This is the original release, plus 4 tracks that are available elsewhere.
The album was a change of direction for Mayall, to a more jazz-based sound in many areas. However, there is plenty for the blues fan to enjoy as well, particularly in the playing of Mick Taylor, who plays with a maturity well beyond his years (he was 19 when it was recorded!). Every member of the band is a seasoned pro, and that much is obvious by listening to all their contributions. The Bare Wires Suite, although slightly self-indulgent in places, generally works well, and the remainder of the album contains some very strong songs, all written by Mayall himself.

This is another must-have album for all fans of British blues-based music at it's best.

Superb album, some great songs and god knows how many moments that send a real chill down the spine. Also has some of Clapton's best playing including a fantastic Les Paul sound, which became the "woman tone" that has influenced who knows how many people. Great songs, great playing, great voices - a genuine, complete classic.

I bought this on vinyl all those years ago, played it to death for months and promptly forgot about it! I remember thinking it was ever so slightly disappointing after the overwhelming brilliance of the Clapton and Green albums. Mick Taylor's playing was great but seemed slightly stilted compared to his illustrious predecessors. How wrong can you be! "Oh Pretty Woman" is the definitive version in my book, "Snowy Wood" is a guitar instrumental par excellence and Taylor's contribution is outstanding throughout. That's not to mention the tight brass section and Mayall's astonishing harmonica solo on "Checkin' Up on my Baby". Even Mayall's usually reedy voice achieves real passion on Buddy Guy's "My Time After Awhile" and shows remarkable sensitivity with ... Read More:

This is the Mayall band of the Mick Taylor era, with one or two personnel changes between the tracks (mainly of bassplayer!). Mayall used to record all his gigs on a 2 track reel to reel tape recorder, so don't expect 2008 sound quality! However, the music more than makes up for the poor sound, with some long tracks which allow them to stretch out on fine solos, particularly from Mick Taylor and Dick Heckstall-Smith. Taylor really impresses here, showing a maturity far beyond his tender years (he was 18 when most of it was recorded!). Much of what is on here was never recorded in a studio, and Mayall had a habit of almost pulling songs out of a hat at gigs, so the chances are that 1 or 2 of these were only ever played once! Those of you who have the 2 ... Read More:

This is a surprisingly good album from Mayall, who plays all the instruments (apart from a little help from Keef Hartley on the drums). Quite laid-back and introspective in feel, I suspect it may have got him thinking about using this almost acoustic approach in the future, which eventually came to pass with the "Turning Point" line-up of Steve Thompson, Jon Mark and Johnny Almond.

Don't expect any wailing guitar solos, because there aren't any; what we have are nicely crafted songs with sympathetic accompaniment from Mayall. His keyboard and harmonica work is particularly good. My favourite track is Marsha's Mood, a slow moody organ instrumental, but there is plenty to enjoy here. This release has one extra track (an alternative take of Marsha's ... Read More:

The Best Of John Mayall-Bluesbreakers is a great album for that hit of sixties blues music. It starts with the superb 'Crawling Up A Hill' and goes from strength to strength. You get examples of all the most famous guitarists he had playing with him and hear how tight his various bands were. John Mayall's Bluebreakers were the forming ground for many blues and rock artists of the time and his influence is well acknowledged by musicians and fans alike. This is a great starting place if you want to hear his style and sound and this album tends to be less expensive that 'The Essential' collection also available. If you like this you can progress to other classic albums by the band, as well as a live album, which is an important element of the overall feel of ... Read More:

This was the first album by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, whose ever-changing line up had temporarily stabilized as John Mayall (vocal, harmonica, guitar, 9-string guitar), Roger Dean (guitar), John McVie (bass) and Hughie Flint (drums), and it was recorded live. Klooks Kleek was at the Railway Hotel, next door to Decca's recording studios in West Hampstead. The club's compère Johnny Gunnell, together with his brother Rik Gunnell, persuaded Decca's engineers to run cables from an open studio window into the club, enabling studio quality sound in an environment in which the band excelled, and so their gig of Monday 7 December 1964 was preserved for posterity. At the time, the band (with a different guitarist and drummer) had released only one single, Crawling ... Read More:
