This album does take some getting used to. And you do have to take some space from it and go back again with fresh ears before you are able to sort out what's new. The Meeting of the Minds - The Making of Floating Point [2008] DVD, which is awesome, helped clinch the album for me. The first thing you have to deal with is the overwhelming drums and percussion throughout. At first you can't help but think that this is some kind of mistake in the mixing, but persist and you can get used to it. It's a deliberate decision that ensures that the whole album operates at a very high energy level. John's albums have always been about joy and ecstasy and seldom on the mellow side of those values. The album is meant to be rhythmically overwhelming, ... Read More:

Scraps and nuggets from a doomed feast. The paucity of salvageable material (no less than four versions of one track for example) backs up the now legendary accounts of the 'difficulties' John Mclaughlin and Tony Williams had with Jaco Pastorius... but inspite of it all the music veritably roars at times; each member an absolute master of his instrument. Aaaah what might have been.

This is simply an astonishing record that demonstrates the exceptional levels of communication that four people can achieve. Yes it's jazz, but not as you know it and you will find the hairs on the back of your neck standing up over and again and the music expresses thoughts you never thought you could have. After 45 minutes of the most intense power, the set is topped off by "Peace Piece", a moment of sublime beauty with just one classical guitar.

This is the sort of music that makes you priveleged to be a member of the human race.

Brief review -

Can not compare to the Live in San fransisco album (for me). But still damned impressive guitar work. Some sweet melodies and fingerwork. Much more attention to the overall compositions and less on virtuosity. Generally much more laid back than thier live album 16 odd years previous.

But, this album has style, and I like it a lot none the less.

If you're looking for the franticly extreme skills shown on "fiday night in San fransisco" you wont really find it here.

But for beautiful flamenco atmosphere and noodling galore, buy this!

6....or 7/10 for me

I recently purchased this CD and it sounds just as groundbreaking now as it must have done in 1972. I much prefer this album to Birds of Fire even though there are no synthesisers on it. I think it sounds more focussed and intense. You can hear how this album influenced mid 70s progressive rock while inspiring a new generation of British Jazz rock bands.

I've held off from reviewing Floating Point to now because a John McLaughlin release always entails such a huge amount of information to assimilate. An extreme example is Live at the Royal Festival Hall: 27th November 1989 which it's taken twenty years of listening to, on and off, before it finally blew my socks off.

So the first thing about this amazing film is it takes you right into the essence of what Floating Point is about, and will now short circuit that comprehension lag. I now totally get where every track is coming from. Furthermore, as many of the musicians on Floating Point are also familiar from the Remember Shakti discs, Remember Shakti - The Believer, Remember Shakti and Remember Shakti: Saturday Night In Bombay, this will require me to go back and revisit ... I've been listening to this cd for years, since a friend played it to me at university in about 1991. I then looked for it for about five years before stumbling upon it when I was living in Japan (at that time it was out of print everywhere else). All I can say is, it's beautiful! There's nothing else like it in the world. My personal favourites are the daffodil and the eagle, which has a very interesting climactic rhythmical structure, and get down and sruti, which I would say is more like a blues than a reggae - the highlight is Shankar's crazy, funky solo. get it, listen to it, and expand your mind and soul!

Gordon Beck and company take popular songs and really stretch them out then bring them back to their recognizable selves. you'll find yourself smiling. Just plain fun and the playing is wonderful.

Well what can I say really? Mclaughlin yet again finds himself in the company of serious musicans and as one would expect the results are awe-inspiring and at times transcendental.

In the past I have been a wee bit unconvinced with the idea of fusing electric guitar with instruments as acoustically delightful and organic as Bansuri and tabla. However, Shakti as always create wonderful and exciting music and rightfully show off their virtuosic craft. This really works and Mclaughlin truly pushes the guitar's rhythmical and improvisational capacities to the limit, but of John would we expect or except anything less?

A must in any serious music library!
