At first I was skeptical of the whole Johnny Cash is a great musician/songwriter, and thought it was oldie country music for the oldies to reminisce about, and say how they never make music like they used to; that was until I was given this CD to try after seeing the film based upon his life. Johnny Cash is without doubt a very clever songwriter/commentator with catchy 2-3min songs that reveal a story with very poignant and/or witty poetry set to music you'll hum along to after very few listens. Clear examples of this can be found in songs such as 'A boy named Sue' and 'San Quentin.' If the Grim Reaper traded in his scythe and recorded an album of melancholic country guitar music this, one imagines, is what it would sound like. Johnny Cash's rich Fire N' Brimstone tones haven't diminished one bit despite his advancing years, but listen carefully and we now find it tinged with something soft and imperceptibly fragile. Something almost like regret (or relief) of a life lived through. Cash is one of those rare artists that can take a song, any song, and turn it utterly on its head, allowing the dark stuff of life to ooze out and re-contextualize it in ways you'd never even considered. This is a masterpiece, this is how records should be done, crisp sounds, a great and passionate voice, an intensity that is difficult to see in other records. I think this is his best performance ever, too bad he was not there to listen to it. His version of "Further up on the road" is just unbelievable, I think Springsteen might have cried when he listened to it. Similarly "four strong winds" is really good and better, for example, than Neil Young's version on Comes a Time. A record that will make you cry, with passion and soul. I don't give 5 stars easily but this is just too good.

I ordered this set after seeing it advertised in an email from Amazon. I was not very familiar with Johnny Cash, with the exception of Boy named Sue and Ring of Fire. This double CD really has blown me away. Cash's voice is great but the entertainment comes as much from his banter with the prisoners as from the songs, many of which have jail themes. All in all a great showcase for a natural performer. The sound quality is also excellent demonstrating better stereo effects than many modern albums.

Not being an expert on country music or on Johnny Cash, I must say this album is moving and very very suggestive; with simple but clever arrangements, beautiful songs and amazing vocal... Obviously more than merely touched by age and various ailments, mr. Johnny Cash performes with great passion and suggests wisdom no young singer can convey (or even come close to conveying)... I like it very much!

This is the first of the so-called American recordings, and arguably the best. The songs have been carefully selected by Cash, and I believe there is certainly something here for everyone. If you love music you will soon fall in love with this album. Most artists today don't have one percent of the emotional intensity that Cash had. I highly recommend this album without reservation.

Brill gift for friends and family. Bought if for my old man last Xmas and he loved it...even caught him wathcing it again last week...10 months after I bought it. Great guest artists performing and Cash at his formidable best. A must buy for any Cash fans.

This is a brilliant selection of songs by Johnny Cash and for a man in the twilight of his years there is just so much energy and sheer joy of music making coming through on this album. Just play 'Country Boy' to see what I mean and to confirm what a great idea it was to get Tom Petty et al to back the great man, who's voice still sounds so strong. Don Gibsons 'Sea of Heartbreak' was a favourite of mine when I was at school and its so good to hear it again. The Carter families 'The kneeling drunkards plea' drives along at a great pace and 'Meet me in heaven' is just so moving to those of us who have loved Johnny and June over the years and can imagine them walking those streets of gold.
