I first heard the song Case of You in the film Practical Magic and thought how wonderful it was. I bought the film soundtrack (the whole music selection for the film was pretty good) and then i bought the album Blue to see what the rest of Jonis work was like.

I fell in love with the album so completely, that now i've moved to MP3 and sold 99% of my CD's i can't bear to part with this one. One of the others is Court & Spark.

The music is so simple, the strings, drums, and her voice- the most wonderful voice i have ever heard, conveying such emotion that the music and words combined make the whole album an amazing rollercoaster of feelings and thoughts.

I'd recommend to anyone who has ever felt any ... Read More:

My introduction to Joni Mitchell was about 5 years ago with the album hissing of summer lawns, which changed a lot of things musically for me in short I was blown away. Joni Mitchell voice on this album has got a lot deeper but it only brings out the songs more if this album doesn't move you in a way then I have to agree with other reviewers you really don't have a pulse, in short this album is simply beautiful.

A little late in the day to be sure sure but with good reason.

I wasn't sure I wanted to hear it but having bought the album
it then took me a good year to absorb its' wily charms.

'Shine' is a conceit of a sort you see.

The languidly marvelous orchestral excesses of'Both Sides Now' (2000)
and 'Travelogue' (2002) notwithstanding it has been almost
a decade since the last recording of new and original material and
'Taming The Tiger' (1998) could never be seen to have been a high point
in Ms Mitchell's long and illustrious career.

Having 'retired' from the business of strumming and singing in
2002 her muse lay dormant for a while but we can be glad that

LOTC was my intitation into the world of Joni Mitchell. Fourteen years old, with romantic notions about Woodstock as it approached the twentieth anniversary, I searched out the cassette to hear what Graham Nash had described.

The "Woodstock" anthem was the catalyst for LOTC success, but it is by no means the only, or even best, tune this effort offers. "Morning Morgantown" sets the scene for a recording that basically takes the listener through a pastoral panorama. Along the way are some observations about the intrusion of art meets commerce ( "For Free"), manipulative triangles ( " Conversation"), Gender roles ( the stunning " Arrangement"), and spiritual quest ( " The Priest"). Of course, another career launcher, " Big Yellow Taxi", ... Read More:

I discovered Joni about a year ago, hearing the song Case of You in the film Practical Magic and looking it up online. I bought the album Blue and completely fell in love with its mellowness and her wonderful voice.

Having listened to Blue about 7 million times i decided to seek out more of Joni. I read the reviews on a few of her albums on Amazon and settled on Court and Spark.

I expected it to be pretty similar as it was released only a few years after Blue, and was surprised to find it different. It's not as mellow as Blue, it's more jazzy and funky, more instruments are going on, backing singers- everything. But it doesn't take away the feeling she puts into the music, and of course her wonderful voice is still there (if a ... Read More:

Joni Mitchell's voice on this cd sounds beautiful, smooth and relaxed.
This is a collection of her most accessible songs that catch and charm the listener.I loved the lyrics - lyrics such as: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." Someone on this website said Joni was the Mozart of the 1960s.But with music and words as good as the ones you'll find on Hits,I have to conclude she was Mozart!

If you have ever seen any of the footage of Joni in concert in 1970 you will not need telling how amazing she was, just her, her instruments and an audience, and LIVE, not modern day "fake live" like bluffers such as Kyle Minogue with her weak, nasal and heavily processed vocals, dub - layered over her partially live vocals.
The "Hissing of summer lawns" and "For the roses" are two albums I could never be without, there are a few good female artists about among the vast pond of dross but none can hold a candle to the Joni of the 60's and 70's. I think she went a bit too experimental and self involved by the late 1970's and her political hang ups superseded the music in importance (just my opinion) and the music became quirky and sparse with only tracks like "My secret ... Had this album on vinyl years ago, and recently bought the digitally remastered CD. Wow! It's even better than my most golden memories of it! I had forgotten just how good a singer Joni Mitchell was/is. Most of these songs are just Joni with her guitar. One of them - 'The Fiddle and the Drum' - is just Joni without even her guitar. But these are not simple three chord strumalong songs. In spite of tending towards the sparse and austere, they are also quite complex. There are unconventional guitar tunings, chord progressions and key changes that keep these songs fresh, however often I listen to them.

Then there is the Joni Mitchell voice. She really has been one of the best singers of the late 20th century in any genre. (Is that a bit over the top? I don't think so.) ... Read More:

Joni fans tend to divide between those those that prefer the naked confessional of 'Blue' and those that regard the jazzy trio of mid-70s albums that comprise 'Court & Spark', 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' and 'Hejira' to be her creative peak. I'm in the latter category.

I first heard this album in a musical instrument shop. they were playing 'Harry's House' and the line "A helicopter lands on the Pan-Am roof like a dragonfly on a tomb" caused me to ask the staff what it was. Joni's lyrics are cinematic - like little movie pitches - and beautifully evocative of that period. That track and the album's title investigate the dark side of the suburban dream, set to cool jazzy accompaniment that will make everything else you listen to sound crude.

This is a classic example of the "brilliant first album". An artist puts years of ideas into her first offering, with her own unadulterated personality on display. The result is powerful, innovative, and retains its rough edges.

I first heard it in 1968, when it fell loosely into the "folky" category. Adolescent fans of that genre (as I was) idolized people like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon as "Folk Poets". Half-way through the first track, scanning the words on the record cover, I had one of life's epiphanies. I thought "This woman really is a poet!" Her words, in this and many subsequent albums, make all those other song writers seem insipid, artless, incompetent.

Her arrival on the scene was actually quite explosive. She had a lot of street credibility from the outset. She grew ... Read More:
