After the trilogy of Friends albums Jools returned with an album where the style and tone of the music was more suited to the big band sound of his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. I was hoping he reverted to being the main singer but he shares the vocal duties with his regular female vocalists Sam Brown and Ruby Turner with a star turn by Beverly Turner and two with Solomon Burke including his greatest creation `Everybody Needs Somebody to Love'.

I think the album works best with the arrangement of the instrumental numbers and the songs which Jools sings but some of the guest vocalists are given sympathetic arrangements particularly Ruby Turners ambitious take on Dylan's `Blowin' in the Wind'.
Not a total return to form but still ... Read More:

After the success of the Friends albums, where singers from all backgrounds of musical backgrounds were backed by Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, it was only a matter of time before the band were to back a singer over the course of an album. And here it is, Tom Jones had already proven his voice was sympathetic to the sound of the big band on the second volume of the friends series and the only question was could an hour of this material hold the listeners interest.

The album start s with the full effect of the orchestra surging through the first two numbers `Life's Too Short (To Be With You)' and `200lbs of heavenly Joy' which act as real statement of intent and suggest that this may be a match made in heaven.

The success of the first Jools Holland and Friends album `Small World, Big Band' was such that a sequel was unavoidable and there where at least the idea had the benefit of being original here it seems tired like an album of outtakes that weren't good enough to grace the original.

Again the tracks I enjoy the most here are the ones where as well as been an admirer of Jools I'm also a fan of the guest star, this particularly applies to the songs recorded with Chrissie Hynde and Ray Davies.

It is perhaps most telling that my favourite track collected here is `Tuxedo Junction' which is the only track without a special, or otherwise, guest.

Live albums never capture the excitement of being at a concert and having seen Jools and his little big band twice in the early nineties I can confirm that this is the case here but it is a wonderful document of his then live revue.

It kicks off with Jools solo on the piano with `Bumble Boogie' the highlight from not only his album `Solo Piano' but also from his original solo band the Millionaires, which is improved on here with Gilson Lavis joining him on the drums. Then the remainder of the band join him for `Bad Luck Blues' and Holland's own `Skin the Cat' uncollected anywhere else. Next up is a brilliant performance of Dinah Washington's `Mean Old Man's World' and the brilliant Holland showcase from Squeeze's `Frank', `Dr Jazz'. ... Read More:

There have been quite a few bad reviews about this album, but having read them and still brought the album and listened to it myself, I'm not sure what they were listening to but I don't think it was this. I love this album, especially, Suggs, George Harrision, Mark Knopfler and J-Kay but not a single track disappoints. A really enjoyable album to relax to or dance to try it for yourself and make your own decision.

The Best of Jools Holland was conceived as a collection of the work he had issued under various independent record labels on signing a deal with major label WEA. It is quite a bizarre collection in that it contains `Heartbreaking World' from the Squeeze reformation album `Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti' without mentioning the word Squeeze at all. To include a Squeeze track at all seems quite strange and if the A&M catalogue was available then either `Hop, Skip and Jump' or `Wrong Side of the Moon' from Jools' first stint in Squeeze would have fitted better with the Boogie Woogie flavour of this album. Also if the A&M catalogue was available it is strange that none of Jools' first solo work with the Millionaires should be included, particularly considering all of the ... Read More:

Music : Small World Big Band Friends 3 - Jack O The Green
By the time of the third volume of collaborations between Jools' Rhythm and Blues Orchestra the idea had clearly ran out of steam. Finding suitable guests was clearly proving problematic and invites to The Sugababes, Terri Walker and David Gray definitely flattered them.

Also were before the majority of the guests would either collaborate in the writing of a special piece with Jools for inclusion of pick a suitable standard or famous song by a suitably iconic source such as The Beatles or Dylan here on the main they are plundering their own back catalogue. And so he have Smokey Robinson with an inferior version of `You Really Got a Hold of me', Ringo killing `Boys', Prince Buster leaving us no choice but to `Enjoy Yourself' whilst Ronnie Wood demonstrates ...
