"Tristan Und Isolde" is a huge and powerful score, one that for many is simply "too much" to handle. It has a kind of "black magic" that no other opera has, and it's not an easy score to get a handle on. The music as a whole is, to say the very least, overwhelming. It took me years and years to really "get into it", and I've heard many recordings of it. That said, I find it very much like a narcotic that I must have. Small wonder that Wagner, when writing it, himself said that "this Tristan is driving me mad". Whatever the case, this EMI monophonic recording stands as one of the great recordings of the century, and for good reason. Furtwangler's way with the score is extraordinary. It's as though he sees a supernatural mysticism in the ... Read More:

This is, indeed, a great performance of the Ring, though to my mind not in the same class as Krauss or Furtwangler. In many ways it would be an ideal entry point for someone looking for a single recording of the cycle, but it is important to note that it is not perfect. Part of the delight of the Solti recording is the magnificent scale of the sound (this is a live recording, albeit from Bayreuth), which will draw new listeners in; more annoyingly this set does not have a libretto, which is crucial for people discovering the Ring. If you are new to the Ring, the Solti set is probably a better bet, or go for the wonderful Barenboim DVDs, where you can follow the action visually, and the text through subtitles.

Sitting through an entire performance of Wagner's Ring can be an ordeal, and there are many out there who prefer just to listen to highlights. Those who like so called *bleedin chunks* of Wagner wont be disappointed with what this disc has to offer. Good sound and great singing which is what this disc has to offer. However, it cannot match Solti, Karajan etc. For one thing, Bohm has a tendency to take high tempis. And that can compromise the deep emotions the music has to offer the listener. Overall though, to be fair, it does offer good highlights from all four operas which make up the tetralogy. So, if you are one of those who just prefer *bleedin chunks*, then you really cannot go far wrong with this. For those who are not familiar with Wagner's Ring, ... Read More:

This is a great performance of Wagner's last opera (gesamtkunstwerk, buhnenweihfestspiel or whatever you want to call it). Maybe it doesn't quite sweep the board as comprehensively as his roughly contemporaneous Ring, but Krauss does present a wonderfully vivid, dramatic, somewhat lighter alternative to the Knappertsbusch approach. Indeed the cast on this recording, with one notable exception, are essentially the same as on the famous Kna re-opening Festival performance of two years earlier. Here again we have Weber's deeply committed and vastly experienced Gurnemanz, Modl's searing, blistering Kundry, London's profoundly anguished Amfortas, and Uhde's fascinatingly corrupted scary Klingsor. That one exception is the Parsifal of Ramon Vinay. Windgassen, ... Read More:

This is the 9th complete recording of the Ring I have obtained and I'm starting to think that it might be the finest I own. The sound quality for an early 1950s recording is remarkable - much closer to the Furtwangler studio recording of Die Walkure than any other live recording I have come across from the time. What makes this recording so special is that it contains so many great Wagner singers at the peak of their powers and that Krauss' interpretation of the score is so immediate.

Hans Hotter's Wotan is sublime, his voice much fresher and clearer than in subsequent recordings - in particular the Solti one. Ramon Vinay might be the definitive Siegmund for me - his baritonal heldentenor brings out the heroic qualities of the character more than ... Read More:

A word on behalf of this legendary set's cast. Obviously the team of Flagstad and Furtwangler are the ultimate selling point, however.....

Suthaus has a most attractive masculine heldentenor voice. His is the best of any other Tristan on the market. His tone is more beautiful than Jon Vickers (compare them by listening to the EMI Karajan stereo set). As for complaints that he is strained, his duets with Flagstad are masterful and his performance in Act III is amazing, very moving without being course or histrionic. The end of Act II sound's just as it should, given his charater's waves of erotic and romantic emotion. He lives his role perfectly and has a powerful voice that matches his heroines artistically.
